RPM Blip on Upshift?

Hey Guys,

Sorry if there is already a thread about this, but I searched the forums and couldn't find anything related to this...

So I was driving home from work today with the SRM turned off, accelerated pretty hard up to 4k in 2nd gear (still in the break-in period, so I wanted to have a little fun while staying within break-in guidelines), let off the gas and pushed in the clutch quickly and the RPMs blipped up to 4.5K - 4.7K before I shifted into 3rd. I thought maybe I had accidentally left my foot on the gas, but tried it again and the same thing happened.

Has anyone else experienced this?

I know there's a very small delay in the drive-by-wire (or whatever) system, so maybe it's just not "seeing" you lift off as early as you think.

That is my guess, but I was just curious if others experienced this.

Did they actually blip or did they just continue rising after you pressed the clutch? The flywheel in these cars is rather heavy so it's not uncommon for the revs to rise a bit between shifts because of the flywheel's momentum.

Mine does move a tad up when i put the clutch in, i figured it was flywheel momentum.

For me it's all to do with the delay once I lift off the accelerator. My clutch foot is too fast for the car :icon17:

The blip happens rarely during upshift on the AT transmission as well. I think there's a previous thread on this subject already...

Remember you only need maybe 35% pedal depression to shift. I find myself being old school and flooring it from time to time.

That's intentional AFAIK. Kind of like SRM but for the AT.

NCSUPACK09 03-02-2010 05:15 PM

I was thinking about it last night, and I think you are right Steve. It's not really a blip, but more of a gradual increase in RPMs. I also noticed that it was directly related to pushing in the clutch, so it sounds like it may just be the flywheel momentum.

m4a1mustang 03-02-2010 06:27 PM

Yeah, I'm sure that's it. There's also a very slight delay with the electronic throttle (some people notice it, some don't) that could be contributing to that feeling. All in all its normal, and can be solved with a lightweight flywheel. :)

Pharmacist 03-03-2010 06:22 AM

happens to me all the time. easiest way to see it is start from a stop, rev a little and slip the clutch for a couple of seconds, then lift off throttle and simultaneously push the clutch back in. you should notice a slight rpm increase for a moment. like others said, it's probably due to a mix of a heavy flywheel and also a slight lag time in the response of the electronic throttle

i was out driving my car today (just got it last night) and it definitely blipped the throttle between my 3-4 shifts. it happened a few times, but only during the 3-4 shift. this wasn't the throttle "lag" that you guys keep mentioning (i noticed that as well), this was an obvious blip of the throttle...

anybody else experience this?

Yep, noticed the same thing a few times today during upshifts while driving relatively aggressively.

I have the AT and a small throttle blip between 3-4 (or was it 2-3?) as well, but only when the engine is cold.

same for 350Z
this is most likely it

NCSUPACK09 04-04-2010 09:17 AM

It is the flywheel momentum...if you go WOT and then shift at say 5k, the flywheel momentum will carry the RPMs up another 500 or so, but if you take it to redline and the engine is winding out, you don't really get this effect.

PapoZalsa 04-04-2010 09:25 AM

That blip happened to me but with the SRM on.
