Added weight detrimental?
I have a 60 pound subwoofer/ box in my hatch now. For you experts, is my loss of quickness a false perception or do you think 60 added pounds is problematic. Not sure if my mind Is playing a trick on my but I do feel slower.
What do you guys think? Is there a weight/ loss in power mathematical ratio thing? Thanks. |

Probably in your head man. From what I have read on the internet (who knows if this is trustworthy) a weight gain of 12lbs is the equivalent of losing 1 hp. So if that were true, you only lost 5.

exactly, I take my spare/jack/passenger seat out whenever I go to the drags, when i cleaned out my car and took those out, i dropped 102 lbs from the car, and thats good for a tenth or two.

I don't want to get in a track vs daily driving debate. All I'm concerned about is from a mechanical and speed point of view if it's possible the 60 pds is slowing me down. I like to "spirited drive" and sometime with other cars and don't want to loose to much with the sub

It is slowing you down.. thats a fact.. did you think adding 60lb would make you faster? If you keep you car under 1/4 of a tank of gas you should be about even as in if you drove around before with a full tank.

if you are really trying to save a lil weight then I may have a couple solutions for you. JBL makes a great shallow sub that is lightweight and in a Z's cramped interior would give big bass sound @ 1/2 weight reduction. Check out the JBL W0V-2. It runs about $110 and gives $350 sound. You can also go to a custom shop and get a fiberglass box made. That would keep the whole unit under 40lbs. Or you can go with a pre-made unit. @36lbs and the best compact bass package for the money is the Infinity basslink 2. Its the sub and amp all in one. Rates @ 250rms watts of bass. And at 36lbs you just put 2hp back in your car.
I would consider replacing your head unit with a lighter unit as well. Last edited by UNKNOWN_370; 02-28-2010 at 09:41 AM. |

Thanks for all of the answers. but i wasnt looking for a solution.
I dont want to boost my car (LOL), i dont want to take out any seats or switch to shallow mount subs (i have already had an allin on slim unit) My question was just simpy this. If me and another Z lined up next to each other and I had my 60 pound audio set up, are we going to run that different. I think this hypothetical will maybe help some people answer the question. Im not tracking, switching subs, boosting, racing, etc. Just curious is 60 added pounds is negative for overall speed or do we need to add say 200 or 300 pounds to our cars before they start to run different. Someone has to have some sort of mathematical, mechanical, experienced answer with this type of question. Thanks!!!! |

60lbs isn't going to do that much to slow your car down, its like having half a person the other seat. 200 or 300 lbs would make more of a difference but for daily driving its really nothing that you should really be concerned about IMO. You like your sub so put it in the car, as long as your happy thats all that really matters.

Weight capacity of the Z is 450 lbs which includes two people, cargo or combination thereof.
Take your body weight, your stereo adds, etc. and then calculate. If you want to offset simply start by removing your spare. Yes, weight will slow you down, but what is it you want to accomplish? Are you at dragstrip trying pull down your times with a buddy in the passenger seat? Throw your buddy out.
