Nismo Accident Pics -- Very Sad

Nah, it's not the fault of the VDC being on or off, it's Newton's fault. Him and his dang laws of physics. Disobey the law and you're done!

It's incidents like this that may convince car manufacturers to not even allow for VDC to be turned off in future models. Indeed, I believe there are already some cars in production that don't really allow for traction control to be fully disengaged, even after you've hit the button to turn it off. It's a shame that it only takes a few rotten apples to ruin things for everyone else.

Bingo! I'd put money on it. That's why most teenie boppers are turning off VDC to begin with.

That really sucks. All he had to do was admit his mistake, learn from it, and move on.

Another one bites the dust....hopefully wherever he is, he's not naive to think that this is a quick 2 week fix. I wish it something they told you when you buy a Nismo, "If anything happens please be aware that replacement parts are always delayed and on back order." I know I flamed him through and through, but come on you're telling me that your friend turned it off the night before, what's next your mom turning VDC off?

How do you resolve #1, other than not coming in too hot?

Usually it's just damage control.

In road racing... just try to keep the car under control and keep it on track... if you go into the grass well then keep your cool and get back on. You'll notice that sometimes if a driver knows he's gone in too deep he will just keep going straight IF there is runoff or an access road.

In NASCAR... SLOWLY ease off the gas, ease up off the steering, and use enough brake to keep the car under control and let the car move on up the track (you are trying to maximize available grip to contribute to braking)... hopefully you'll have scrubbed enough speed to keep it off the wall.

On the street this is hard because you usually can't go off the road without encountering a curb or some other obstacle.

Yeah, I remember from my MSF course, that traction is a pie chart, where changes to the vehicle "eat" part of that pie chart. Basically, if you're cornering and this consumes 50% of your available traction, then you have up to 50% available for accelleration or braking.

From this, I gathered that coming in too hot, I'd straighten up and use 100% for braking, then turn.

I was going from the perspective that if you're coming into the corner too hot - say at 90% traction, and you let off, the car will use that remaining 10% just on engine braking....(examples, not hard numbers!) - you touch the brakes and you're screwed. If you're still too hot, you're kissing grass/wall/curb.

Yeah, you have to do everything you can to straighten the trajectory of the car out so you can brake most effectively. Exactly how you do it depends on the setup of the car... some are very tail happy off throttle, some get twitchy under braking... etc.
