I can romp around in my 600hp 300zx TT (sans VDC) and still haven't had an accident. These accidents come from driver error or adverse conditions...typically the former.

Glad you're not injured...car's can be fixed or replaced. Just be careful until you get to know your Z.

I had a BMW M3 with mods and a lot more power prior to the 370z. I took it to a car control clinic and had a blast. As I was getting ready to take my turn on the throttle steering exercise, I reached to turn off the nanny function (VDC by another acronym). The instructor said I didn't need to because the stability control would allow plenty of aggressive driving before it kicked in. Sure enough both me and the instructor took several turns at throttle steering at pretty aggressive pace and I never felt the nanny kick in. So I'm a little skeptical when some one says, "I crashed my car, VDC was off," as if that was the only variable preventing a mangled machine. Maybe saying "crashed my car, my brain was disengaged" would be more accurate.

My 3 guesses.

1) Came in too fast, jumped off the gas, unsettled the rear, swung around and went over the curb.

2) Cooked the corner, understeered into and over the the curb.

3) Came around a corner too fast, rear slid out, he freaked out and counter steered waaaay too much, swung out the other way and hopped over the curve.

How do you resolve #1, other than not coming in too hot?

Usually it's just damage control.

In road racing... just try to keep the car under control and keep it on track... if you go into the grass well then keep your cool and get back on. You'll notice that sometimes if a driver knows he's gone in too deep he will just keep going straight IF there is runoff or an access road.

In NASCAR... SLOWLY ease off the gas, ease up off the steering, and use enough brake to keep the car under control and let the car move on up the track (you are trying to maximize available grip to contribute to braking)... hopefully you'll have scrubbed enough speed to keep it off the wall.

On the street this is hard because you usually can't go off the road without encountering a curb or some other obstacle.

Yeah, I remember from my MSF course, that traction is a pie chart, where changes to the vehicle "eat" part of that pie chart. Basically, if you're cornering and this consumes 50% of your available traction, then you have up to 50% available for accelleration or braking.

From this, I gathered that coming in too hot, I'd straighten up and use 100% for braking, then turn.

I was going from the perspective that if you're coming into the corner too hot - say at 90% traction, and you let off, the car will use that remaining 10% just on engine braking....(examples, not hard numbers!) - you touch the brakes and you're screwed. If you're still too hot, you're kissing grass/wall/curb.

VDC is always active when you start your car.

Anyways, my guess would be making a left turn onto the access road at a good clip, a little too much throttle on exit... he tries to correct but the back end swings around and the car makes a half spin to the left, the right rear making contact with the curb first.

OR a failed attempt at a drift. You know how all the kids are out trying to drift these days!

Bingo! I'd put money on it. That's why most teenie boppers are turning off VDC to begin with.
