What's the purpose of the black and white matrix material inserted in the windshield surrounding the rear view mirror post? Does this do something in connection with an option item

Trivial Question
What's the purpose of the black and white matrix material inserted in the windshield surrounding the rear view mirror post? Does this do something in connection with an option item not on my Base or is it just decorative? Couldn't find any reference to it in the owner's manual.
