Trivial Question

What's the purpose of the black and white matrix material inserted in the windshield surrounding the rear view mirror post? Does this do something in connection with an option item not on my Base or is it just decorative? Couldn't find any reference to it in the owner's manual.

Sun shield for when you can't cover up the sun with the visors. Also lets your eyes relax and focus on the rear view mirror when you look up.
