Nissan has "self-healing" Paint?

This is quoted from Nissan's write up on the European version of the 40th Anniversary Z:
"As its name implies, the Euro-spec 370Z Black Edition comes in two metallic shades black and quartz with both paints using Nissan's Scratch Shield technology that promises to 'heal' the finish in the case of stone chip damage." Wish we had that.

The infiniti g had the self healing clearcoat but the feature was later removed. I'm not sure if it worked well or not, probably not.

I'm picturing a kind of liquid metal technology, like in Terminator II, where a rock chip just fills in automatically. Of course, at some point it becomes self-aware and kills us all, but up until then, yeah, the self-fixing paint is freakin' sweet.

is that an official nissan statement? i read an article a while ago about this thing, but it talked about being able to heal light scratches, not stone chips. if it really works, that's amazing.

It's only supposed to work on those "micro-scratches" that work their way into your clearcoat. It's like when you wash the car and get those tiny scratches on it.

I have it on my '09 Infiniti FX35. I really don't notice a difference, though the car is black. It says to leave the car in the hot sun to heal the scratches. Tried that a million times, but I can still see as many little scratches as I would if I didn't have it.

Got it in one. Its only the clearcoat that can heal itself. The press statement is misleading as it wont heal anything that breaks through the clear coat like rock chips. Infiniti have it on the G37 over here in the UK too. Yet to see it in action, as over here where its cold, you need to heat it with a heat gun to get it to work. Speaking to my dealer, they said it does work, a brand new 370z came off the transporter with swirls and they managed to "heal" them, but I dont know if this is just BS.

Whats more important to me is how this stuff reacts to polish and machine polishing. I used to machine polish my 350z when it got swirled and it came up lovely, but not sure how this new clear coat will react. Oh and what to do if you need a patch repair on the paint, presumably only Nissan/Infiniti have this clearcoat. Over in the UK we can use people like ChipsAway to do patch repairs on paint, but they wont have the clearcoat.

It's only available on metalic and pearl paint though. So my yellow edition (and the red ones) don't have it...

Sratch shield paint should have been called clearcoat-guard because that's what it actually did. If u scratch the car with a brush while washing or rub something that may put a mild scratch in the clearcoat. The self healing coat will repair itself within 3 to 7 days. It works very well. Most people think it will heal the actual paint when it is damaged. That is not the case.
Unfortunately, infiniti did away with scratch shield for 2010 deeming it too expensive to produce at the G pricepoint. The 370z does not have scratch shield paint and I doubt it will since they couldn't afford to keep it on the G.

While I agree with what you say about it only mending scratches in the clearcoat and not those that penetrate it, have to disagree with what you say about the 370z not having Scratch Shield, especially as the quoted text was for Europe. I guess you get different paint to us in the UK, as the NMGB Sports Cars product manager sent the press release directly to me on the day of release and it reads (as the first post):

Also in the UK, all the metallic and pearl colours have it as Paul_S said.

If it's soft enough to repair itself, it'd soft enough to get stuff embedded in the paint...

IMO since I've not seen it myself...lol
