I would follow the manual if you want to keep the car for many years.

1200 miles on the factory oil, then switching it for Royal Purple. I might even do it at 500 miles to get a majority of the metal shavings out.

That's what I will be doing.

What are the thoughts on Synthetic oils? I've seen brands that inclde service like BMW basically suggest 10K mile service intervals. Are they sacrificing long term durability (out of warranty) for short term $ savings?

Royal Purple IS synthetic oil. Probably the most popular pick outside of Mobil 1.

I'm against changing to synthetic so soon. Reason being that the regular oil will help get everything worn and seated quicker than synthetic will. Regular oil is better for the break-in period.

I'd switch to synthetic at 3750, then do changes at 5-6K mile intervals after that. I don't think a change at 1200 is necessary, but it certainly can't hurt.

So you don't have to do oil changes every 3k miles anymore on this car?
