Manual or Automatic - What do you have?

Ok, lets see the split of manual and automatic transmissions with the Z owners on the forum.

frost 01-31-2010 03:42 PM

This should have a poll.

djsizzy 01-31-2010 03:44 PM

I'd imagine it will be pretty heavily skewed towards the MT side. like 70/30 or so.

a poll would be nice :)

ctzn 01-31-2010 04:38 PM

Manual of course...

PapoZalsa 01-31-2010 04:43 PM

The options messed me up! There is a question on a question with that "IF".

It should be Manual or Manual w/Synchro Rev Match. ;)

Trips 01-31-2010 04:44 PM

I thought this has been covered?

RavenRonnie 01-31-2010 04:45 PM

The automatics have gotten to the point where they are as fast or faster then the manuals, no matter who is shifting... but I bought my car to drive and enjoy and I personally wanted to have the fun of shifting and absolutely love the synchro feature... JMO

That's because instead of just stating what they have:

-Manual owners will show their e-balls by saying they won't drive anything but a stick, and driving an auto is for wussies.
-Auto owners will try to defend their position by stating how sophisticated their trans is, and that it's faster than the stick.

You forgot all automatic drivers are women.
Proof, at the UH parking garage there are two 370z owners, me (male) who drives a 6 speed manual & another (female) who drives an automatic. 100% proof right there. :stirthepot:

Obviously statistical proof of all situations!

Internet logic ftmfw!

Z_you_Later 01-31-2010 05:36 PM

Manual all the way .. But no Synchro Rev .. Sometimes I wish I got an Auto cause of all this LA traffic .. But it's just so damn fun I just will get another car as my DD.

370zproject 01-31-2010 05:52 PM

auto :P

Zdom 02-01-2010 04:05 PM

OK, manual users, if in an automatic, if you can simply keep the accelerator pedal down and only have to move a paddle to shift vs. letting off the throttle, push in the clutch, move the shift lever to another location and let the clutch back out, how can that possibly be faster?

Yes, yes, automatics have progressed enough to catch up to even the savviest of manual transmission users. You know what? I bought it with the 6-speed gearbox because I wanted to have it. I'm not getting paid to go around a track the fastest, so that "oh auto is faster anyway" has nothing on me.

So NYAH. lol

6MT 02-01-2010 04:10 PM

OK, I'll be the first to ask. Why are there more SyncroRevMatch answers then there are Manual transmission answers?

34 SRM to 30 Manual at the time I am writing this.

Trips 02-01-2010 04:11 PM

keep stirring the pot!

But the automatic NYAH is faster. LOL

This thread/debate is turning into the same thing as the great oil debate.

phelan 02-01-2010 04:20 PM

ibtl NYAH.

vipor 02-01-2010 04:20 PM

NISMO! 6MT only!

Trips 02-01-2010 04:23 PM

7at ftw!!

xiven 02-01-2010 04:24 PM

^ needs it for sitting in traffic

tettes 02-01-2010 04:25 PM

i would never buy a sports car with automatic transmission. i enjoy shifting the car...even in LA traffic.

Trips 02-01-2010 04:26 PM

exactly!!! lol

6MT 02-01-2010 04:27 PM

SRM is still ahead of the manual choice..... go figure (?)

theres atleast 3 people that fail at reading, actually surprised its not more.

nuTinmuch 02-01-2010 05:20 PM

The community here seems to care a lot less about auto or manual. It seems like a lot of people have an obvious preference, but aren't up to force it on others, which is cool.

Zdom 02-01-2010 08:41 PM

Has anyone taken an automatic to the track?

Even the Indy cars are moving toward automatic:

Excerpt from The Indianapolis 500 Electronic Edge...

Adam Schaechter, chief engineer at AJ Foyt Racing, says that one of the biggest changes in the race over the past few years has been the switch to the current six-speed, all-forward-gears, semi-automatic transmission. It eliminates the clutch pedal and provides electronic control to synchronize timing and torque requirements, resulting in a smooth, efficient transition.

The drivers only have to contend with a paddle shifter that toggles up or down one gear. The shift control incorporates strain gauges to determine when a driver desires a transition. This has led to a “shift without lift” approach to driving, where the driver always has the “pedal to the metal.”:icon18::icon18::icon18:

I could let someone else drive for me too, but that wouldn't be any fun.

At least now the SRM totals are on the correct side of the MT totals.

DJ_TJ 02-02-2010 05:46 AM

my sports cars are manual and my grocery getter is automatic.

Portlander 02-02-2010 07:34 AM

This will seem odd, but I actually prefer driving with the SRM turned off so far. Picked up the car only 3 weeks ago and have put very few miles on it, maybe my preference will change with time.

billydsz 02-02-2010 07:44 AM

Automatic. I also have a color tv and I use a microwave. My grill uses propane instead of charcoal too. :stirthepot:

Zdom 02-02-2010 09:28 AM

I have driven manuals all my life, this is my first semi-automatic sports car but it gives me the best of both words. No constant shifting when in traffic or the city and "shifting" fun when I want to cut lose on a curvy road or track. I love it. I guess that's why Nissan makes it with the two options, other sports cars don't.

mick 02-02-2010 10:19 AM

i am so glad nissan did not make one type of transmission for the 370z like they did for the GT-R. if they did, i would have to buy another car.
