Four days ago I bought a 2020 370z from CarMax. I have thirty days to either keep it or give it back for a refund. The CarFax report shows three owners and three trips thru an auction. Car’s got 9000 miles and appears to be clean. Carmax replaced the tires, although they had enough tread depth to pass NYS inspection, they were very worn on the outer edges and one sidewall had a 1” cut. I’m guessing from some spirited driving. The CarFax gives no information on what maintenance might have been performed, other than oil/filter by CarMax about a month ago. Is there any way I can find out more about routine maintenance? If I went to a Nissan dealer in town, could they see any details if work was done under warranty? And am I correct in thinking the car still has some manufacturers warranty left? As you can probably tell, I just stumbled in to this deal unprepared because I really wanted a 370z for years and years just because I think they are beautiful and fun to drive. I looked for months to find a 2020 with low miles and the touring package. I really like the car but I’m concerned about the history of a three owner vehicle that’s only two years old with such low mileage. I was blinded by the Z light. Advice anyone?

I could be wrong but I thought if there was any work performed by the dealer it would be showing on the CarFax. Does the CarFax have any information about maybe this car being a ‘fleet car’; I would imagine if any of the previous owners took it bc of issues - that would show on the CarFax.
Regardless I think you’ll be fine - I think there are few reasons why the mileage and owners - I feel the Z is a car that is balanced but its not a stop light monster like a V8 American Muscle like the Mustang or Camaro and while I have no qualms about daily driving mine - its not a good family car (for obvious reasons). For instance I got my car with 4700 miles in 2018 and couldn’t understand why someone would get rid of it; but I have had zero issues with it. Regardless if you are really concerned - maybe take it in for an inspection to see if there is anything wearing prematuring but again - I think you’ll be fine.

Thanks for your reply, I appreciate it. Car started life as a lease in Tenn. seven months later it hit the auction and went to a dealer in TX. Eleven days later, registered in GA. Seven months later, auctioned in GA. Three days later, auction again in TX. By October of 2021, the car was auctioned five times in Texas. In December 2021, registered and lien in ElPaso. Four months later, back at the Texas auction. In May, it ended up at CarMax. Although it is not reflected in the CarFax, I know it was repossessed April 2022. I also know the front and back bumpers have been painted and not really rubbed out well. (Sigh). Probably way more than anyone on this forum cares to know. I guess I just needed to spill my guts. If my wife knew any of this I would never hear the end of it.

Have you decided if you are going to keep it. Honestly a repo car might have me concerned some but....if it seems clean and passes the mechanical inspection - I would probably look to keep it. The one thing - is since car prices are way over valued at the moment and the new Z is coming out next year - you might be able to find cheaper options in about 6mo if you do decide to return it to CarMax.

You can go to the dealer and see if any work has been done on the car. Any dealer can pull this up for you. Warranty and maintenance. Do your oil changes every 4k miles/6 months. You may want to quick change your first one just to be sure all is well. Yes, you have a 3 yr/36000 mile bumper to bumper warranty. The start date is when it was first sold.

I'd dump it. Too much changing of hands and then the damage repairs you found. It's not worth the chance of it being flood damaged etc. Not everything shows up on Carfax. There's reseller dealers in florida with their own body shops who repair wrecks and don't report them!

I bought my 2010 in 2016 with 72k on it, it has 98k on it now and zero issues. Limiting yourself to ultra low mileage isn't a mechanical necessity. Knowing the whole story, including maintenance is most important.
