is there a rock-chip resistant windshield?

just hit 500 miles and two windshield cracks/rock-chips already.

nothing serious........it is not even cracked.......... 2 chips

BUT it is on the driver side, right in front of/on the driving vision range about the same level as my eyes.....

damn, i hate driving on I-66 - especially with all those constructions...............

anyway, is there an aftermarket windshield..........

windshield is windshield..........but i am sure this is going to happen again and again...........

is there such a thing as a crack/rock-chip resistance windshield....................

Ahh... the most dredded sound (to a owner of a new car)...... SNAP!! of a rock hitting windscreen.

eddieconfetti 01-27-2010 05:28 PM

Me too. The first week i got my car, i get a small chip. Its the worst feeling ever.

It's not so much it hitting glass, it's that you KNOW it's hitting your paint too.

BlackCherryZ 01-27-2010 07:05 PM

i do not know if i should replace it......... it will be about $100 with insurance, but.......

had it only hit somewhere else, out of the vision range............hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.....

damn......... think about other drivers with GTR or exotic cars...................

thank God i do not have a door ding yet............ yet, that is............

$100 ???? That is so cheap for glass insurance! We can't get glass insurance for the Z for under $500!

At least it is replaceable and will look new again. If it was your paint, however... yeesh. I hope you have the clear bra!!!

dalparadise 01-27-2010 08:15 PM

I'd say wait until it cracks and becomes a distraction, as this will not be the last chip you receive. Then replace it quickly.

I've always heard that replacement glass is even thinner than OEM, but I have always had better luck with replacement glass. So, who knows? Maybe my driving improves after being hit with the replacement cost of windshields. I dunno. I drive 80mph+ every day, though, thus increasing my odds of cracking my glass. It's part of ownership and freeway driving, I think.

PapoZalsa 01-27-2010 10:03 PM

I had less than 300 miles on my Z and had two small chips on the windshield.

Just make sure your deductible for comprehensive is not the highh if the windshield cracks. ;)

frost 01-27-2010 10:07 PM

I've driven a lot of sports cars, and I've never had such frequent issues with pits/chips. This windshield must be at some magical angle for rocks :icon17:

m4a1mustang 01-27-2010 10:08 PM

If it starts to crack it should be addressed. Small chips, though, are inevitable and will happen just as soon as you replace it...

BlackCherryZ 01-28-2010 02:31 AM

the problem is..........the second rock chip could potentially become a major distraction....

had it not been for the windshield, my left eyeball would have been hit.............

i might get used to it, if not............well...........i do not have a choice, do i?

Jessica 01-28-2010 06:41 AM

I got a rock chip in my windshield with less than 600 miles. Luckily I live in Florida where they have a no fault/no deductible law for repairing/replacing windshields. It cost me nothing to have it fixed and I was told that if I want, I can have it replaced with "Nissan" glass before 1500 miles. After that, it's generic glass.

VCuomo 01-28-2010 05:06 PM

There is a film that can be placed on the windshield - pretty much just like a clear bra on the paint, only it's put on glass. I'm going to have it done to my Z in a few weeks.

You're lucky. Where i live, one ounce of coke would cost $20. :icon18:

you could just get plexy glass replacement or plastic. i think forged performance replaced there windows with some sort of plastic

BlackCherryZ 01-30-2010 12:32 AM

how is plexi-glass or plastic compared to OEM windshield?

i just have no clue........ in terms of visibility........... sounds like it would be more "chip resistant" but with visibility issues

j.arnaldo 01-30-2010 12:38 PM

Got one, about the size of an average "twinky's" fingernail, in the lower, right-hand side of my my windshield, since 2008. Since it's passed inspection for 2 years, it'll be there until I notice an increase in its size, or until it doesn't pass inspection. Got big things to be concerned about, to worry 'bout the inevitable. BTW, plexiglass is easily scratched; stick to good old safety glass, dude.

1slow370 01-31-2010 02:36 AM

come on people if it's just a chip have it filled before it spiderwebs. I got a chip 4 mins later I had a 5 inch crack that ran to the edge of the windshield. some of the epoxy's they use now harden clear and do a good job of making it not look like it's there

oh and for the lexan, it will crack overtime all by itself due to age, turn yellow, and in thevent of an accident you will die

Supergoji 01-31-2010 07:37 PM

there is clear guard you can place over the windshield and it comes in a pack of 5 or so that you stick on your windshield and when it's time to toss it, you peel it off and you have 4 more left on the windshield.

alot of porsche guys have it.
