Exxon v Shell MPG
My local Shell station quit credit card transactions at the pump. I have a Shell card and they still require I pay inside due to drive offs. Since I always fill the tank, there is no way to pay in advance. I then went to an Exxon station and filled up as usual.
My mileage has averaged around 19 MPG or so since I bought the car new. I am retired, but this is my daily driver. I don't drive a lot, but I do try to get the oil temp over 180 degrees every time I drive. I just filled up again at Exxon. My mileage for this tank was 16.5 MPG. That is lower than it has ever been. Up until this time I have never put in any gas but Shell premium. Any ideas why my mileage would drop so drastically with Exon? |

Does one gasoline contain ethanol and the other does not? Ethanol free gasoline gives about 4% more mileage.
Here in Canada, Shell 91 is ethanol free. |

She'll v-power is the best gas, generally speaking. Your experience doesn't surprise me one bit. It's the additive package.

Funny thing about Petrol.. it all starts off the same, ,all the different company's fill the tankers from the same big Tank at the port .
The same boat bring all the petrol . . In New Zealand . Only 2 choices of good fuel . .BP 98 oct and NPD 100 oct Haven't tried the 100 yet ,, only been using 98 so far NEVER use 91 . .. 95 only if you can not find a Bp that has 98 .. Shell here only has 91 and 95 Thats lawn mower fuel .. |

In my travels throughout the states 91-93 octane is all you can get without getting in to “race fuel” You made me when you said 91-95 is lawnmower fuel, around here lawnmower fuel is 87-89 octane

I think New Zealand uses RON.
I think it's a common misunderstanding that other countries use higher octane fuel due to the similarity of the nomenclature. When I first came to the US, I was surprised too. Now I know.

91 is the lowest grade here Its all No Lead now ...(yes was problems with older cars when they took lead out) I think in Japan all Fairladys run on 100 as that's what they mostly sell so Im lead to believe .. Has been court cases here where people buy a Jap import car like a Z then run it on 91 and wonder why the engine fails ,, They take car yard to court because they didn't tell them 98 only . .and person who brought the car loses most times but sometimes they get a refund on car or new engine must add my Honda powered water blaster will not run on 91.. just stalls, tip it out use 98 and its fine .. |

2 ways to measure octane. Ron and Mon. Countries other than the US mostly use the Ron method. It has a higher number. The Mon method has a lower number for the same fuel. There is a few countries that use that method. Here in the US. We use the Ron-Mon numbers. It's the average of the two methods.
