I do not think the subwoofer in the Z is that powerful or even close enough to the laptop for this to happen.
~Are you able to boot into the laptops bios and check to see if the system sees the HD. Depending on the size/brand it will say something like "Western Dig 250GB," that is not anywhere near exact but close enough.

Magnets are not a computer's best friend.

Although it may be possible.. i highly doubt the magnet in that speaker is that strong enough to do that..
Slap a new HD in there and call it a day.. hopefully you have backups of your stuff.

turns out it was a faulty connection between the hd and the laptop prolly caused by corners... =)

Jikhead and 370zsteve, magnets can wipe hds... try leaving your laptop on your home subwoofer if you have a 5.1 sound system.

if you had the laptop running, then shaking the HD while its running is a recipe for failure.

I wasn't questioning the whole theory of magnets, but just our Bose factory sub being able to do it. I had recently took apart the sub to look at it, and it's two little 4" speakers with a tiny magnet. Plus, my work laptop is in my backpack everyday back there.

I've had 12" subs wipe out harddrives about 2 ft away. Very possible as the magnets are very powerful. I don't know about your stock system doing that, maybe if you set the laptop directly on it.

I take my Dell Laptop with me everyday to work and it rides on top of the subwoofer. No issues after 11 months.

yeah it wasn't the sub

the data was all there when reconnected with the laptop.

jikhead - didn't know the magnets were that small... makes sense though because the bass isn't very good at all
