Default Japan Announces 2035 ICE Ban - Long live the Z

10 or 20 years ago, I would be looking to see whats newer and better to replace my existing Z with eventually.

https://www.wsj.com/articles/japan-t...ef-11608887640

Now, a new reality is dawning, where if you are serious about ICE sports cars, you will have to hoard them. You won't be trading in your 370Z for a 400Z because a 400Z alone will not last you for the rest of your life. I think around 2035, its looking there will be enough bans that it won't make producing these cars worthwhile for the few places that don't have a ban. I find it highly probable that a Biden administration would announce an ICE ban by 2040, effectively killing the global sports car market.

Instead, you need to start thinking now about what sports cars to buy in the next decade unless you will want to start paying inflated used pricing on out of production collectibles.

You will need to hold on to both your 370Z AND purchase a 400Z in order to hoard enough ICE sports cars to last you for the rest of your life.

My personal list of ICE sports cars to acquire (brand new) before 2035 end of production:

2020 370Z (acquired)
20xx 400Z
20xx C8 Corvette

This should be good to keep me happy till I die.

At some point the ruling elites will out law gasoline or make it very expensive / scarce, the ICE autos will become dust collectors / lawn ornaments.

I also see society shunning people with a ICE like they have the plague and refuse to let you in their parking lot or through their neighborhood
I can see it now, a sign at the entrance of a sub : NO ICE PERMITTED

We'll all be in 're-education' camps before that happens. Private ownership of houses, cars, etc will be outlawed, everything goes to the government. Your nice house will be confiscated for the ruling elite, you'll get a one room tarpaper shack down by the river....

That is why we have the 2nd Amendment.
So we can protect ourselves and our property.

Unfortunately....it doesn't work that way. They won't be coming with guns to get you (except in rare nut cases).... and their guns are bigger anyways.....they'll be coming through pop culture, through the mainstream media, through Leftist academia.... you're not going to be shot out of existence....you'll be phased out...

I don't know if Americans got it, but up here in Canada Lexus had a commercial a few years ago with the ominous ending line "enjoy driving while you still can". ICE ban and self-driving will ultimately culminate - if some have their way - in no human driving. Ah....the "utopian" vision....just get in your car, tell is where you want to go - and if permissible - it takes you there, all while central command logs and monitors every second of it.

I believe phased out is correct. After you die all of your possessions will become state property and not be passed on to your beneficiaries and a couple of generations later, total state control

I don't think its the end of the sports car. There are plenty, fast, electric cars.

They may be fast but they don't have "soul". The ICE has all these working parts that make science sexy and beautiful.

I am not about to disagree with that, but saying that it is the end of the sports car is too extreme. They are just going to be different and yes soulsless, but still fun to drive.

I've rented a Tesla on Turo. It's faster than my Z. While I am not saying it is a sports car, without the sound and vibration....it gets old and yawn inducing real quick.

I still have approx 50-60 years based on average male life expectancy. I need to make bank the next decade to hoard up at least three gasoline sports cars to last me till I die.

This is what I think. Cruise ships etc will go nuclear powered. Airplanes will find a new source of energy that burns cleaner than what we have now.

As for ICE cars, it's inevitable that they will phase out the ICE. Those that have them will be able to keep them but I have a feeling they will add additional taxes and fees to keep them running (Emission tests, plate renewals, finding the RIGHT type of fuel and so forth).

I mean look at the carbon tax here in Canada, by 2030, if I recall correctly, the price of regular gasoline (87) will be jumping by 40 cents. Like wtf. . . I will be paying close to, if not more than $2 a litre for premium gasoline, what a rip. They better find a way to mass produce electric cars and make them super affordable and reliable ASAP. As for costs, I'm sure the governments will find a way to tax additionally electric cars, such as battery disposal feels, additional fees for purchasing the battery, fees for discarding the rubber from the tires and whatever else. The cost of electricity will also be going up, that's for sure. I just don't want to wait for 30 mins in one spot for my car to sufficiently charge, that to if there isn't a line up already at the "refill" station.

Today’s batteries as a power source for cars is unsustainable. There aren’t enough resources on the planet to make the amount of batteries that would be required to replace even half of the worlds ICE cars by electric ones. We won’t even get into the trucking industry and commercial aviation. Then there’s the increased demand on the existing electric power grid which would need to be expanded. Tree huggers would love that idea. So, forget batteries. But unfortunately, electric motors are probably the future. We just don’t know what the power source will be yet. Or, it might all change for ICE if a clean and renewable fuel can be concocted to replace gasoline. Who knows.

But yeah, electric cars become extremely boring, extremely fast. Goes to show that it’s not about how fast a car gets you from point A to B. It’s about the visceral sensation of feel and sound. This is the main reason that electric motorcycles are not very popular even though that makes more sense than an electric car.

Only time will tell. The progress we made from the Tesla Model S and Fisker Karma (if you see those as a fair checkpoint) has been pretty substantial in terms of volume/availability.

I don't think it'll be the cars, but the infrastructure that presents a challenge. 10-15 years, I'm not sure if we'll have charging stations on-par with the volume and turnaround time of gas stations.
