The other thing with an EV is that once you buy it. Then you have to put in a charging station at your house. Now you have to figure out how many amps you need for it. Then figure out your panel box. If you have a 100 amp box. Figure you will need to go to a 200 amp panel. How many people can afford to up grade their panel boxes. Most places, you have to have a licensed electrician to do it. Another thing, if you have to park in the street. Do you run a cord from the house out to the EV. Then do you trust the neighborhood. If you live in an area with a HOA. How will they handle it? Most HOA's are full of azzholes that control them.

I can see them successfully implementing a ban on the "sale of new" ICE cars which will just simply cause new production of ice cars to a halt and put focus into hybrid. It'll just be whatever is out there in terms of 100% ice is what will remain until generations of ICE drivers no longer are here to purchase and drive them.

I doubt they'll be able to outright outlaw both the driving of ICE cars and driving itself and force driverless cars on us. Should this happen and they can successfully deal with the fallout of such a thing then this will be beyond our life time and we will be long dead.

It hurts my head to think of everything that would need to change all around the world in order to facilitate something like this and im not even talking about the logistical nightmare that this would cause. It'll rattle the world and the disruption it'd cause in both old & new systems in effect would be devastating, let alone would it could do to our economy. It would seriously require an unprecedented focus and major shift simultaneously with the rest of the superpowers worldwide to get us there.

Ultimately, the market will decide what happens in the future. People seem to think that the world is loving electric cars, they arent, they love tesla's. The government can tell us about all the changes they'd like to make, doesn't mean its going to happen. Trends change, directions shift, pushback & appeals prolong and are successful, and lastly governments change as well. There really is no point for any of us to worry about this in our life time.


Edit: Mind you, with all that i said...I'm not opposed to electric cars, electric does have its place and if i could afford it, it'd have an electric as a daily where i dont care how i get to point A to B but i'll always have something i can play with, work on and use during the summer and weekends. That's where the Z fits, and what it does perfectly.

When the military switches to EV's. That will be it. I don't foresee an EV tank anytime soon. I know they are working on some EV vehicles now. But to put it to service is decade or so away.

The were working on Miltary vehicle EVs back in the 90's 5 minutes from my home. General Dynamics. I was friends with the engineer on the several projects mostly turbine generator_> battery and Electric propulsion. The EMI would wipe out most sensitive electronics and also create an easy signature to spot, track and target.

I'm not sure military EVs are going to be possible, unless they come up with a reliable way to shunt the EMI to ground. The COMSEC equipment I worked on had RF shielding like you wouldn't believe. A 4" x 4" circuit board, surrounded by 3" of wire mesh and steel.

Like Asus mentioned - the world isn't loving EVs - they are loving Teslas. The govt can ban the sale of new ICE mobiles but how about the infrastructure to fuel those EVs - does that mean eventually we will see gas stations turn into a combination of the 2 - gas stations on one side and then EV fueling on the other? One of the greatest accomplishments and reasons to buy a Tesla is their super charge fueling stations so one can make a trip from CA to FL and know you won't be stranded bc of the fueling station network they have built.

Overall I think the EV will be the only vehicle sold eventually thus phasing out the ICE mobile - but....I think it will be much longer than we expect (not bc of a lack of technology) but bc of the cost associated with it. Just think the govt offered huge rebates on taxes if you got an EV but even like that - how many EVs have been purchased bc of that govt subsidy - not as many as they would have hoped and EVs are still expensive even with the govt subsidy.
We might see something like hybrid engines where vehicles that are traveling under a certain MPH - use a hybrid engine but after you hit a certain speed - it uses gas to circumvent the 'ban of ICE mobiles'

I think when it all settles in with everyone, Plug in hybrid or Hybrid will be the compromise. With the ICE portion getting smaller and smaller. Maybe 1 Cyl.

Hydrogen fuel cell powering an electric motor is the direction I last heard. Also needs to be able to run diesel or jp8 etc as backup. Not sure how that’s going or if still going. Batteries were never going to cut it.

Hydrogen fuel cell powered ev’s is the real long term answer I& your looking for comparable range, refuel times, minimal impact to/can work with existing infrastructure.

Of course, the limited range p, recharge issues, general $$$ needed for a battery ev POV might be exactly WHY that is the solution being pushed so hard. I’d like to say the free market will decide but it won’t be that simple.

There is a solution to the soulless self driving ev tho, converting your existing ice car to ev, still super connected driving experience, all you’re changing is the propulsion method, kind of like a middle ground. Check out ev west, they’re doing cool stuff like this to classic Porsches etc. it’s a cottage industry in its infancy but it’ll exploding over the next ten years I bet.
