I want to fix my hatch rattle, what do I do?

Hey friends,

With my hatch closed, if I am standind behind the car and lightly tap my fist against the hatch on the left or right hand side I hear the rattle.

While I drive I hear it while driving over rough parts of the road.

With the hatch open I could not replicate the sound.

Any solutions?

Also does anyone have a bizarre sound coming from the seatbelt mechanism?
Like a bad squeak or tiny rattle?

Shesha, with the seatbelt thing, I kind of thought that's what it was when I first took my car. Now I could be wrong, and you could be talking about something totally different, but the leather/vinyl on the side of the seat seems to make a cracking/rubbing sound as if it's rubbing against the inside structure of the seat itself. Is this where you're talking about? It's right over your left shoulder.

I can't comment on the hatch issue because I don't seem to have that problem.

I don't think it can be, because its a base; hence no leather.

Exactly. Mine's a base/sport. It's fake leather or something, but it's still really noisy. Especially when it's cold.

It's that little patch of "whatever that is" right over your shoulder. Is that where it's coming from?

No, I mean I have cloth interior. When I twist the seatbelt mechanism it stops. I think thats what it is, I just can't seem to fix it, and its right next to me ear, and it drives me mad.

How about doing something radical and taking it to the dealer for a warranty fix? Whoa!

Shesha, we have cloth, yes. But you should still have a piece of "Pleather" on the side of the seat. When you shift in the seat, that might stop it when you're reaching back to adjust the seatbelt "contraption." If it is coming from that little patch of leather, I'm afraid there's not much you can do. That seatbelt thing clicks on mine as well. I wonder if that is your main problem. I wonder if you could throw some silicone on the hinges to stop it. Hmmm.

The thing is about your comment, a lot of us don't have time to be taking our cars in for the small stuff if we can just fix it ourselves. What's your average time at the dealer? They tell you to come in at a certain time, no matter what brand you have, and don't even get to your car for sometimes, hours. When I go in for an oil change, whether my Infiniti or this Z, and on occasion, I will sit and wait for an hour or more. Time, a few of us, just don't have to be sitting there.

In regards to the squeak from the seatbelt mechanism, I had this and solved it a few months back. It's from the plastic mechanism. The part that the seatbelt actually goes through is on a little swivel and the sound comes from that. I solved this by getting some WD-40 and shooting a tiny amount into the hinge (you may instead want to spray onto a paper towel and rub in in there or it may get all over). I did this several months back and the annoying sound coming from next to my left ear has never returned.

The mechanic said he emptied almost an entire sound deadening kit into my hatch/roof to fix the hatch rattle. YMMV. It took him a couple hours (the day after I took delivery of the car) and we did a check ride together.
