Rip #206

Well. Some ******* with an expired license in a Winnebago decided to cross all lanes on 15 because "he had the right of way because he was going straight" (his words). Fucker is lucky I had enough time to aim for the front corner of the frame instead of his driver's door or he might not be here right now. At any rate his insurance company isn't gonna like this.

Dude that sucks! I'm sorry.

Ventruck 07-01-2020 08:32 PM

Sucks hard.

Hope you're alright though.

Duc_Z09 07-01-2020 08:39 PM

I have no injuries except a sprained finger.

Rusty 07-01-2020 08:39 PM

That's chitty. :shakes head:

Expired license, Go after him. Because his insurance might not pay.

My insurance agent is my buddy's wife. This guy is toast.

Zingston 07-01-2020 09:39 PM

Sorry to see that. Glad you're ok!

God-Speed 07-02-2020 04:24 AM

Sorry about the car but glad to hear that you are OK!!

Duc_Z09 07-08-2020 07:59 PM

I should probably add that I'm considering an S3 as a replacement. With mods and a tune of course.

And also that the ******* neglected to inform his insurance company of the incident. That's OK, I did him that courtesy today.

theART 07-09-2020 12:37 AM

buy it back from insurance and rebuild it, the damage is moderate at most.

Dunno man, multiple airbags popped and the front wheel is split. Coolant all over the road. It's totaled for sure but I'm not convinced it will be worth a rebuild. Maybe a part out if the buyback isn't outrageous.

Duc_Z09 07-10-2020 10:25 AM

Shop says over $18k for repairs. Pretty much spot on what another one would cost from a dealer right now. I'll ask about buyback and might have parts for sale in a bit. Or maybe not depending on what it would cost me and if I want to bother. I sure as sh*t don't want it back.

Duc_Z09 07-10-2020 06:57 PM

I drove a 19 STI today. It was ok. Interior sucks.

Actually it is. And on further examination it's broken.

danegrey 07-12-2020 11:26 AM

glad to hear you are ok, sorry about the Z....

Duc_Z09 07-20-2020 06:45 PM

Update: They're offering me 18,600ish for the car plus another 2500 for the finger... dunno the buyback yet because they didn't offer but I sure as hell requested it. Sound fair, or are they trying to screw me? It's hard to get an accurate value on these things but I haven't seen them listed for less than 20.

AZ-370Z 07-21-2020 02:28 PM

Hey Duc - chitty news my man.

A quick CarGurus search says you aren't going to find a 2009-2013 Nismo for less than 23k with approx 60,000 miles. Not sure how many miles you have, but you might be able to spin this real nice in your favor.

Say something along the lines of "To replace my car it'd cost me $23,000, plus with a broken finger (if you do typing, manual labor) the cost of missing work is going to run me $X,000 amount of dollars over what you're offering. Please revisit your assessment."

I haven't been in vehicle claims so I am talking out of my *** here, but my lady went through something similar with a messed up shoulder and essentially said kick rocks - pay me more, and she got a bit more for her trouble + Physical therapy paid for 6 months or so.

Felix 808 07-22-2020 10:35 AM

Ouch, Hope your alright as everything else can be replaced. Good luck getting it sorted.

Duc_Z09 07-22-2020 03:05 PM

Yeah that's what I found too. I'm asking for an explanation of their value assessment and I may push the issue a bit. In any case the buyback is $2566, which would be dumb not to do.

Agree for that amount, and time to take apart....

So funny story. Not only was I able to mitigate injury by leaning back, relaxing, and (mostly) getting the hell out of the way of the airbag, somehow I also managed to not even stall the engine during the crash... it ran fine right until I shut it off probably 20 seconds later, but well before the shattered radiator could become an issue. It should be 100% fine pending a visual inspection.:eekdance:

Duc_Z09 08-08-2020 10:13 AM

So. If I'm going to rebuild this thing I want FI. I really like the pulley up through the hood look but I can't find much about putting a Whipple on a Z except a 12 page argument on this forum. Anyone have some insight?

Bobby is a crook. Do not give money to RJM.

Check out TopgunZ supercharger options or the GT-R turbo kit if you don't want to go Boosted Performance or Fast Intentions.

I always liked the FI TT kit. The whipple draws me because it's something totally different. My weird mad scientist mechanic buddy seems to think we can make it work. I'm not as confident, but the guy did put a 300zx TT into an Isuzu Amigo so what do I know?

I was just hoping there was already a good kit for the plenum and tubing and everything.

Well that's disappointing. Why not?

Zyonara91 08-09-2020 01:25 PM

Good to hear you're okay. In the end the day it's a piece of metal we get attached to due to the blood sweat and tears we accumulate saving for it and working on it. Go after him/her. Sue for damages.

Duc_Z09 08-14-2020 09:07 AM

It pays to bitch apparently. I'm getting 17k plus the car plus the 2.5k bribe to not sue the sh*t out of Progressive. I can live with that.

Resale value is now nil, so after I inspect the unibody I'll decide whether to part it out or rebuild and add a pair of turbos. It looks ugly but the panel gaps haven't moved so maybe there's life in it yet.

JARblue 08-14-2020 09:48 AM

Squeaky wheel...

Nice work  Good luck with the inspection!

Thanks. The more I thought about it the less I wanted to lose my Z. I can't justify replacing it with another RWD sports car now that I have a 13 month old and everything else I like is out of my budget if I don't want a car payment (which I don't). I thought about an S3 or Golf R but even the Audi guys told me the handling would leave me disappointed if I'm coming from a Z.

Plus even after 11 years the Z is still one of the best looking cars in the road IMO.

Duc_Z09 08-28-2020 10:00 AM

Time to see if it's worth fixing. I think structurally it's all still good. What I've got are 3 deployed airbags, a broken wheel, broken lower control arm and sway bar end, fenders, hood, and windshield that are toast, and pretty much all the plastic junk from the radiator core support forward is annihilated. The engine still starts right up on the first crank and I don't think the strut towers moved at all.:ugh2:

cv129 08-28-2020 11:40 AM

Best of luck!

You have about $8k-$9k in parts, bodywork and paint, if you do disassembly and assembly yourself. If you do dont mechanical work, than add about 80-100 hours of labor at whatever rate. Your best bet is to get a flood or rear end collison Z and use the parts from that. good luck.

All mechanical work and paint will be done by myself and a buddy who repairs/builds cars professionally. There won't be any bodywork apart from maybe sandable primer as all damaged panels are just getting replaced and everything from the doors back is fine. The whole car will get new clear and a bunch of wet sanding, however (since Nissan factory finish is sh*t anyway IMO). I hear you on a parts Z. That's really my best bet for all the incidental junk up front... especially since it's a nismo. The front bumper parts are my biggest concern. Z1 has the OEM nismo conversion kit but for $2500 I'd rather be buying exhaust and fun parts.

I could easily just buy another Z... but I don't want another Z if that makes any sense.

Duc_Z09 09-04-2020 09:16 AM

I should probably make a build thread. New stuff on the way: Mishimoto radiator, Z1 diff upgrade kit with Whiteline bushings, every idler pulley on the engine plus tensioner, serpentine belt, oil pan spacer, and vented carbon hood. If I can get a donor car at auction (got 1 lead so far) I'm in business. Then on to stage 2: Fast Intentions TT, clutch upgrade, motor mounts, exhaust, etc.

Debating changing the color too. Dark metallic orange maybe? Black is just too damn hard to keep up with.
