Dang I figured the frame would buckle before the pawl would let loose under weight.
I wonder what other brand names may be associated with that design. Scary stuff and is why I always leave my jack engaged even through stands are in place.

I like my little HF 3ton jack stands because the lowest setting is so low (model 38846). But I'm glad to have a couple of nicer sets like the new Esco jack stands I just got last week.

I just went out and checked my jackstands, they're ac delco but they do have that same style pawl system

The article says the defect was attributed to old (aging) machinery in the factory

For clarity, and what jar said, the manufactory tooling wore down to the point that the pawl didn't fully engage.
