Battery Winter Storage

Gentlemen,

The Z Roadster has been tucked away for the winter here in Southern, Ontario, Canada. So ... which is preferred ... remove the battery from the car and trickle charge it during the storage period, or, leave the battery in the car and trickle charge it while its hooked up? Or does it even matter?

If you leave the battery in the car, you don't have to worry about the ECM having to re-learn the engine next Spring. On some Zs, you will lose radio presets if you disconnect the battery.

+1 on leaving the battery in the car. The benefits outweigh the minor drain on the battery, which a trickle charger will take care of.

No idea what these winter battery problems are. Our winters in Florida get down to 40’s for about 2 weeks and then back to 90+ degrees.

FWIW, there's no need to hook the battery up to a charger if it's not hooked up to the vehicle. Mine's just been sitting in the garage for nearly a year now until I have a chance to figure out the starter and horn issue (electrical drain) I'm having. Battery test full charge a few weeks ago.

I heard somewhere that you shouldn’t store a battery on the ground. Supposedly drains it.

Unlikely unless the rebar in your concrete is large enough and close enough to your battery to interact with it. Set the battery on a 2x if you're worried about it.

Setting it on a piece of wood doesn't hurt.

That used to be true when battery cases were made of wood. No problem with a plastic case.

You could always just pull the negative cable.
That is how i've kept my civic for ~2 years now. I start it up once a month or so and it always fires first try - and thats surprising considering how heavily modified that car is.
