Oil Consumption

Hey everyone, I know they're many threads on Oil Consumption issues etc. I have a 2013 370 with 35k on the odometer and I've heard from 09-10 has an issue for oil consumption due to not having an oil cooler from factory. I've changed my oil exactly 1500 miles ago with Mobil 1 5w-30 Full Synthetic. I do 3000 mile intervals all the time and now I'm seeing the dipstick a little above the bottom dot. Checked underneath no leaks found anywhere whatsoever. Was wondering if anyone else is having this same issue currently. Oil temp usually runs up to 220 most of the time. I tend to baby the car, seen redline maybe twice. Not sure if high oil temp has any relevance. Thanks!

I have to add about a quart between oil changes. Some people have oil consumption and some don't, I wouldn't worry about it.

The motor doesn't consume oil bc it doesnt have a stock oil cooler, it consumes oil bc it's a ravenous oil-hungry b*tch. Nissan considers a quart between oil changes to be 'normal.'

Also, are you waiting 15-20 min after engine shutoff to check the oil?

I had an ‘09 Z with 75k miles when I traded and now a ‘13 Z with 32k miles and no oil consumption issues with either. I may occasionally add a little bit maybe here and there, but nothing consistent. I think this may be a case-by-case by car.

Also, when checking the oil level, IMO, the best time to check is when the engine is cold after leaving off overnight. That way, it gives the oil a chance to settle down and will give you an accurate reading.

Going by what I've read on this site, oil consumption is all over the place - some burn none; some burn quite a bit.

I'd keep an eye on it but wouldn't get too worried unless consumption increases.

220F is not hot for oil. Some would kill to have temps that low.

Also had a 09 Z with 300K+ miles on the clock before it was traded in and really shows how dependable/reliable the VQ37HR engine is overall. After 100K miles it started using about 1-1 1/2 quarts of oil between oil changes intervals. I talked to a Nissan engineer about this and several master Nissan technicians about this oil consumption issue and apparently this is normal operating for the VQ37HR engine to use motor oil between oil change intervals after the engine break in period and you begin accumulating mileage on your Z. I was told between 09-11 years were mostly effected by the oil consumption issue. Some had the oil consumption issue and some did not. Also our cars are meant to be driven if the oil consumption issue is there driving your Z easy will not change the level of oil consumption changes in your engine will. If you are using 5W30 M1 that synthetic motor oil has adequate high temperature stability. Any quality API certified synthetic motor oil will work just fine. Don’t stress out about it and just check your oil level on your dip stick and change your oil on time 3K mile oil change intervals is fine. Oil temp of 220 is normal running operating temperature and that is not considered to be running hot. Definitely consider installing a oil cooler in your Z if you don’t already have one.

I check when I let it sit overnight. First thing in the morning I'll go out and check and yes on a flat even surface. I've heard horror stories of the early year 370Z and fortunately I'm not having that same issue, was just concerned of why its gradually lowering.

Yeah I always use M1 5w30 Fully Synthetic. I plan to purchase the Z1 34 Row cooler kit. I'll continue to check on the oil every now and then. At first I thought the oil cooler seal was leaking but nope.. have 1500 miles left until another oil change and it'll be sitting for the winter.

I typically don’t reach 220 and I live in Florida. My Z is 100% stock and is usually around the 200/210 area, but not quite to 220.

Oil changes, I do every 6 months and typically around 1500 miles (my Z sits in my garage during the week). IMO, oil changes every 3k, esp on full synthetic oil, is a bit too early. My daily car, I’ll do every 5k on full synthetic oil.

I change it between 3 and 5,000 miles. Usually when I get the time to get to my “oil guy”. I too use full synthetic. To me it’s not the oil, it’s the small filter that worries me. I think the oil would be fine at 10,000 miles. Not that I would push it regularly.

Rarely do I get over 200 degrees here in GA. Usually between 160 and 180 thanks to the Z1 34 row oil cooler.

When I move to ATL, you are helping me install one of those oil coolers.

I’ll do what I did with mine. I’ll drive it down to Carrollton and have Z1 install it.

Homey don’t play with wrenches anymore. :shakes head:

LOL!

No, I thought you and MZ DAIZY were chicks, and I think a lot of people would have connected those dots lol, albeit erroneously. Haven't met a dude name Betty or Daizy :rofl2:

Zingston always has hot chicks as his profile picture.
