What type of fuel do you put in?

As my new Z nears the end of its first full tank, i was wondering what type of fuel should go in. I know that it says premium fuel only but is that really necessary? I just put in 87 for all my other cars. So what kind of fuel does everyone else use? What brand to? I only use Shell (because i live right next to one)

LiquidZ 01-09-2010 01:23 PM

Shell 93 or Sunoco 93 for me. I use Shell 93 about 95% of the time.

PapoZalsa 01-09-2010 01:29 PM

Premium 91 or 93. Some states don't have 93, I think.

vipor 01-09-2010 01:33 PM

93 octane.

shell/texaco/chevron. in that order usually, but i think these 3 all use the same gas.

We only have 91 here. Pretty sure that 91 at this elevation (about 4500 ft.) is equivilent to 93 at sea level as far as knock prevention and what not.

To the OP, your car was engineered to run on Premium. Don't give it any less :)

Icib 01-09-2010 02:07 PM

Over here we only have 95 and 98 octane.

The european manual says I should use 98 so I use 98 only.

pty370z 01-09-2010 02:24 PM

Here in my country we have 91 and 95 octane.. I obviously use 95 octane..

VCuomo 01-09-2010 03:13 PM

Highest here is 91 - and my Z runs fine on it (and we're at sea level here).

That's just the european octane scale, its equivalent to the 93 we get over here.

Sharif@Forged 01-09-2010 04:16 PM

Use the maximum octane available in your area. Putting lower octane fuel in your 370Z will at best, result in less power, and at worse, can cause detonation and engine damage under heavy load.

ah good deal thanks :tiphat:

Chris@FsP 01-09-2010 04:30 PM

It's a $30k+ sports car, pony up for the extra couple bucks for premium :D You can put in 87, but you won't be getting the performance that you paid for. The ecu will switch to it's ultra conservative timing map which in turn will lower power output.

Yeah I did some research to this now, seems we only talk in RON which means Research Octane Number.
In the US they speak of AKI or PON which means Pump Octane Number.

So my 98 which I use is the same as the US 93 Octane :)

Chan Chee Hoe 01-09-2010 10:53 PM

I used Shell V-power,a 98 octane fuel.

Is that available at every Shell station? I don't think I've seen it before.

vipor 01-11-2010 08:23 AM

he's in Singapore. guess you missed the whole RON vs PON rating system for gasoline octane. read up a couple posts.

kenchan 01-11-2010 08:39 AM

93 octane in mine. Usually shell or mobil.

Ah right, I see.

golfgirlrobin 01-11-2010 10:26 AM

Figure 12,000 miles a year, divided by an average of 20 miles to the gallon is 600 gallons of gas a year. Average of twenty cents difference between the 87 and 91, where I live, and you'll spend approx. $120 a year more on the 91. Ten dollars a month to use the fuel the manufacturer suggests equals no-brainer. (Assuming I didn't screw up the math.)

Can I suggest you READ YOUR OWNERS MANUAL? :icon14: You wanna put cheap fuel in a high-performance sports car (why did you even buy it?) go right ahead :ugh2:, just please don't post here in a few weeks telling us about your blown engine and how your dealer was a creep and didn't warranty an $8000 engine replacement. Sorry to be so harsh, but dude...what is it an extra $2 a tankful?

Octane rating tips
Using unleaded gasoline with an octane
rating lower than recommended above can
cause persistent, heavy spark knock.
(Spark knock is a metallic rapping noise.)
If severe, this can lead to engine damage.
If you detect a persistent heavy spark
knock even when using gasoline of the
stated octane rating, or if you hear steady
spark knock while holding a steady speed
on level roads, have a NISSAN dealer
correct the condition. Failure to correct
the condition is misuse of the vehicle, for
which NISSAN is not responsible.

According to my GasCubby app I'm averaging $2.76/gal for 93 octane premium. I'm at a total of $942.05 spent on fuel so far for 6,397 miles. If I were to knock off roughly 30 cents/gal to switch to 87 octane I would've saved $102. It's roughly a 10% change, well worth it.

For me anyways, I find it very obvious when a car is running higher octane gas. I've run it ever since I was 18 in everything I've owned including a 71 c10, 87 accord, 95 dodge spirit, 97 240sx, and now my Z. I cringe every time I hear a car that's driving around pinging like crazy, but people are gonna do it. In a van or work truck or Kia, go for it. If you're driving a sports car or a turbo vehicle you should be running premium, or you're just asking for at least 10% less car.

kenchan 01-11-2010 10:43 AM

87 wont blow an engine but he will never get the full power our engines can push out.

antman22 01-11-2010 10:48 AM

I use 93 premium everytime...Not worth using the lower grade gas.

SophiaZ 01-11-2010 07:15 PM

Premium from Shell or Sunoco...the hubby works at Sunoco refinery so I get alot of gas cards :)

I bet a Mustang GT uses 87 octane :stirthepot:

dalparadise 01-11-2010 10:14 PM

I'm half way through my second tank now. It is Shell 93. I prefer either Shell or Chevron, never Exxon, Texaco in a pinch.

I'm pretty sure my first "free" tank from the dealer was either 89 or lower octane, or just of marginal quality. Either that, or my ECU is finally dialing me in. The Roadster is running smoother and stronger now...:driving:

Blackcrimzon 01-11-2010 11:57 PM

My first car was a 2003 350z and my second one was a 2007 350z and now i have a nismo 370z. Since my very first car until now I have only ever used Chevron 91 or 93 depending on were i was. Even if i was super broke and couldnt fill my tank all the way up, i still used the good stuff and would fill it up as much as i could. I mean come on man you got a 370z not some Mustang. And really she is worth it. I mean that is why you got her in the first place so treat her right and she will be good to you :)

OMGWTFBBQ 01-12-2010 12:07 AM

Shell 91 here. That's the ONLY thing my car gets. (We don't get 93 around here)

If you can afford this car, you can afford the extra $0.20 or so per gallon.

D3Daddy 01-12-2010 12:26 AM

Fuel for my 370

We only have 91 in CA, and I have used ONLY Chevron in all of my cars for years.
