Is my Z threatening?

It's not even red like my much lamented 2009 but a base 2015 in white...with no mods. People keep trying to race me. Not Porsche 911s (I don't believe there are any in Western Missouri), not Camaros, not Mustangs, and certainly not Corvettes. It's always guys in giant farm trucks. And even though they are mostly Chevies, GMC's, and Fords (rarely Dodges), somehow it's the same guy too; beard, ball cap, something in camo, and an orange cone in the back (works on highways, maybe?). Yesterday, driving north on highway 7 in Blue Springs was the exception. I pulled up to a light next to a totally built red 57 Chevy. Line turns green and I leave at a normal pace. Man his car was loud. A short blonde guy is driving. He sees me going pass and suddenly floors it. He drives like a maniac, probably close to 90! I drive at a normal speed and catch up to him on the narrow twisty part. What the heck, I keep yelling at him to go for it now. He looks left and right at the cows but won't do it. I guess some people don't know the difference between a sports car and a drag car. Either that or locals find my little car intimidating?

BettyZ 04-29-2019 05:50 PM

They probably think it's one of them Euro-peen fancycars.

I also get a lot of stupid guys in pickups wanting to race. I guess they have something to prove.

CRiZO 04-29-2019 06:52 PM

Rednecks in trucks think it's fun to pick on imports and they all think they're faster than they are. I've wondered the same so I looked in the past, and it's all over their forums. I love big trucks, but their scene is really insecure.

Inspector71 04-29-2019 07:52 PM

I'm glad, sort of, it's not just me. I am a low key person you'd probably not notice. I'll be at a light and suddenly the grille of a truck will behind me, so close, you'd have a hard time passing a sheet of paper between our bumpers. They gun their engines, then, when the light turns green, pass me (double yellow lines) almost clip my front fender, then go real slow daring me to pass. Sometimes they yell stuff. Twice, on city streets they've raced up behind, almost hitting me, and staying on my bumper, forcing me off the road, yelling profanity, laughing and flipping me the bird. No, I have no idea who they are. I'm getting dash cams and now keep me cell phone out, but have no idea what in earth I've done to them. My kids will tell you, this happens a lot. Never happened when I had a Dodge Challenger. When I drove to Texas, I had guys give me the thumbs up and...they were in pick up trucks! But not here in Missouri.

BettyZ 04-29-2019 07:59 PM

Slap a NRA sticker on your rear windshield. Maybe "Tailgaters will be shot; survivors will be shot again."

I had my work scrubs the other day while getting gas and the idiot gasing up his Subaru said, "doc do you want to race?" To which I said not today. Ugh.

bunk 04-29-2019 08:57 PM

I was stationed at ft wood and the closest town was Rolla. I had a 92 prelude.. A buddy and I went to Rolla because we were bored. I had a decent sound system. At a red light, an old pinto pulls next to me while I had some song with alot of base playing. The dude was giving me the stink eye. He pulls ahead of me and I see the chittiest home made subwoofer box in his trunk. He then follows me to walmart and when we leave he keyed both sides of my prelude...
I dont think they like nice things there.

Having a tiny pecker usually has that effect.

Spooler 04-29-2019 09:50 PM

Happens a good bit to me too. IN a Corvette Grand Sport or my Nismo. They just can't take it they have a POS truck. What can you do. Make sure you have a dash cam running front and rear at all times.

Yeah, I get what you're talking about. But the '57? Hey the way I see it the race is over after a 1/4 mile. :driving::rofl2:

I had a clean Honda Accord driving like a bat out of hell chasing me from a good half block. I thought he wanted to race when he pulled up next to me... Nope, just wanted to give me a thumbs up.. lol

If I ever happen to see an MKIV, they are the same way. I thought about getting either "FRS LOL" or "86 LOL" for a custom license plate

ayrton88 04-30-2019 09:40 AM

You ever notice that those rednecks in pick ups all look the same. It's like they have a redneck uniform. Idiots don't even remove their caps when sitting down to eat. And 9 out of 10 smoke. Scary actually. Sometimes I wonder if they can read.

I've honestly been trying to find these people who want to race or mess with me.

Haven't encountered anyone like this, only once in the last year did some kids in a car tell me 'rev it'. That is the only attention I have got.

I feel like I may was well be driving some old Buick by this measure.

NISMO IX 04-30-2019 05:04 PM

I think the whole redneck truck thing just comes down to them not being aware physics. I mean, a big V8 is always better than a V6, right? Given that trucks are almost twice the weight and mass of a Z, they would know better. There will always be people like this, just like there will always be people that give the thumbs up or compliment. Maybe its just that the Z will always turn heads no matter the feeling it gives, unlike the dime a dozen truck or muscle car. It is why when I want to sum up in one word what a Z is, it is "provocative". Just the nature of owning one.

Inspector71 04-30-2019 05:19 PM

I love the ideas about NRA stickers and license plate messages. I'd expect this from Hondas and Subarus (never Corvettes, why would they waste their time, no contest), but giant lift trucks that look like there are no paved roads where they live? Some have brown cigarettes and beer cans at me. This never happened when I was living in Maryland, where I grew up, when I lived in California, or visit Texas. But it does in Missouri. I can so picture that situation in Rolla and am not surprised. Pinto? Inbreds? After my son graduates, I hope to move back home

CRiZO 04-30-2019 05:53 PM

When I had my MR2 (go-kart with 350rwhp), it was like a magnet for the trucks, probably because of how small it was and was a little JDM looking (cf hood, te37s, jdm tails, lowered, loud exhaust, douchebag driving it). I was younger then, so I happily obliged every single one.

If they caught up to me at the next light, they would never line up again. Usually turn or get behind me.

I did have a couple trucks surprise me though. Those turbo diesels can be missiles for the price of a small house.

Now I'm an old and street racing is dumb.

I have a big truck (Power Wagon) with an NRA sticker on the back window. I don't try to race anyone with it. But if we go offroad. That's a different story.

In the Z. I get flybys all the time. I'll watch them come up from behind. When they are next to me. They try to blow my ear drums out. :shakes head: When I'm filling up with gas. Someone will ask me to race. I tell them let's take it to the track and show them the track decals I have on the rear window. That usual shuts them up.

Just yesterday some redneck in his race pickem up truck in front of me decided he didn’t want to wait for the merge and starting cutting left, spraying all kinds of rocks and debris. Dropped it into 2nd floored it and made a hard left!. got onto the highway (and away from the debris field before he could. Of course then the race was on! His Penis extension was gasping and wheezing to catch up once I got to 110 MPH. That’s when I slowed down, let him catch up and drove with my left wheels on the shoulder. I’ve got my car wrapped so it’s no concern to me, but by the way he stomped on his brakes and switched lanes, I’m betting his windshield and nose look pretty messed up today. :happydance:

Sometimes you gotta make a stand. ;)

Just sayin’

I’ve let all the servers at my golf club (that could drive a manual) take Mz Daizy for a ride. It always pays to have low friends in high places!

So the other day when one of them was going on about what a great car it is, and how she now wants one, blah blah blah...

My wife says “I don’t understand why everyone LOVES that car”.

We always answer “have you driven it”? (no, she hasn’t it)

She says no! It’s too small, too low, too loud, and too fast! We always laugh. My wife thinks the coolest car in the world is her 2007 VW BUG ragtop.

To each his own, right!

BettyZ 05-01-2019 09:23 AM

Had that **** go down a while back with a frigging Prius; sped up prior to passing on a 2 lane and the fool purposefully went onto the gravel for a sec to spray me and then swerved back. I backed off, effected the pass, and ab 30 secs later gave him a nice hard brake check.

His eco-friendly *** panic-swerved right off the road and ab 40 yards into a dirt field. Torque your way out of that, Nancy-boy.

The Z Philes 05-01-2019 11:43 AM

In the two short months I've had my Z, I've noticed that trend here in Florida with Jeep owners. Hey look, I get these people are proud of their rig that can climb mountains made of boulders, but that doesn't mean their rig is a top street racer all of a sudden. I've had it twice now. Once, a guy in a bar saw me pull up and was on me as soon as I sat down. Another guy was revving and pointing while waiting for a light to a ramp to an interstate.

Wasn't too many days later that I see this article. Guy in a Jeep tries taking on a motorcycle. In the process, the Jeeper manages to kill his passenger. The best bit of the article is at the end where the sheriff states that the motorcycle was way ahead of the Jeep by the time it crashed. You should have seen my shocked face.

I get Mustangs and Camaros wanting to race all the time.

Raceing engine at light.Doing a flyby. One guy taunted me when I was building car and it was sitting in driveway.

Get them on a track.

We all know about Mustang drivers and traction.

Camaro does make a great track car.Thats not the car I'm seeing rolling up on me.I think most people who own that model of Camaro are smart enough not to race in the street.

The Z is a magnet for Yahoos.

Currently I live in a very small town, so my new black Z was noticed almost immediately. I haven't had anyone try racing me. I do get waves from the few other people in town with nice cars (Challenger, Vette, Camaro, etc.). The only real 'yidiots" I've encountered are from the 'tween-age wanna-be cowboy crowd with their loud trucks, but those young fellas are a joke.

I don't drive to attract attention though, so probably a part of the reason I'm not getting challenges thrown at me. I'd turn every single one of them down anyhow. I grew out of driving fast on the street many, many years ago. It just doesn't appeal to me anymore.

Whjaxn17 05-02-2019 11:32 AM

Similar experience here. Went back to my home town of about 5k people to visit my parents. Some kid in a jacked up truck(like 6-8" lift) w/ some knobby, 35"ish tires pulls up beside me as we're rolling down the highway. Exhaust being turned out the side, it was stupid loud pointed almost directly at my window, so I gently rolled into it just to not be directly beside it and he hit it, but he slowed up again when he realized I didn't. Finally, after about 2 miles of this god awful racket, I pulled it back to 4th and let him have what he thought he wanted. Got the typical ricer/butthurt flyby a few miles up the road when I got caught at a redlight, but the damage had been done:driving:

Ghostvette 05-02-2019 12:06 PM

OP, I live on the other side of the state line from you, and trust me, it's not just there in Lee's Summit. :ugh2:

I hate pickup truck, SUV, CUV and minivan drivers with a passion. None of them can 'drive', all they can do is point and stomp. They are the ones that have been told that this: ( 2" space between thumb and forefinger) is 8" and drive accordingly.
