Default Factory Backup Camera

I'm new to 370Z's. I just bought a 2010 Sport/Touring Coupe and I noticed there is no backup camera. It has navigation, but no camera.

Correct me if I'm wrong, didn't all navigation units come with backup cameras or was this something that came along in the later years?

Is there any way to install a factory backup camera system from a later year if this is the case? What do most people do?

Anything is possible if you know how to read wire diagrams and handy with electrical work. You'll need the factory camera (or any 3rd party cam really)and 4 wires to run from the camera to the NAV unit. 2 wires will be for power to the camera, 2 will be for the video feed. 1 power wire will go to the reverse signal wire (either pin 22 of the AV unit's harness, or along the driver side behind the kick panel). The other will go to ground. The 2 video feed wires will go into the harness that attaches to the NAV screen, pin 7 and 8. When the car is put in reverse, the camera is powered on via the reverse wire and the signal is sent to the screen. You'll need to look over the 2010 service manual to see if these wires already exist, or are available to tap into. Link to the needed AV manual:https://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/370Z/Coupe/2010/AV.pdf

edit: Just looked at the manual for the 2010, and those wires on the harnesses don't exist. You would have to test adding 2 wires to the display and test sending a video signal to them to see if they are active pins on that years display.

Page 263 shows the 2 harnesses I'm talking about. Look at harness M85 and M75. Compared to my 2015 M75 is missing pins 7&8 and M85 is missing pin 22.

You can buy the rear view backup camera from Nissan as a kit. It is about $800 the last time I checked. The video monitor is in the rearview mirror.

I went from an ‘09 Z with no BU cam to a ‘13 Z with a BU cam. The only time I even look at my nav screen is if I’m parked next to a big @$$ truck and can’t see over it. But when I’m clear, I turn my head around. IMO, BU cams are useless and for lazy people.

Or people with a bad neck and you can't turn around. My old Nismo had one, my newer one does not. I miss it. Especially with my neck issues.

I don't know about lazy. When you get out of a parking lot with cars on both sides you can't possibly tell me you can see cars coming especially on your left. The camera has a wide angle so I use it.

This, especially if you get sandwiched between 2 taller cars, the driver is literally blind to any oncoming traffic, pedestrians/kids, or objects.

Yes, hence my comment about the big @$$ trucks....

And BU cams are relatively new compared the how long vehicles have been around. So yeah, I don’t really rely on the camera.

welterbf123,

Don't know if this would work for you, but Rear View Safety (do a Google search for their site) have a rear view camera system that uses blue tooth to a downloadable app on your cell phone. When you put the car in reverse, it fires up the app and the camera (always on I believe) instantly appears on your phone. You may wish to check it out.

My Z is low with aftermarket front end.Allways worry about smashing front of car because I can not see.The camera is great.I back into parking spots using the camera. Then you can just drive straight out. Most accidents in parking lots are someone backing out.

On my 09 with nav, I went with the adapter box that plugs in between the nav unit and the screen, along with the BU camera that replaces the right side licence lamp, so that the BU camera is displayed on the nav screen. The only thing I don't like is that the screen returns to normal immediately after leaving reverse. OEM's typically stay on for a few seconds after leaving reverse, which I would like.

Don’t think that’s the case for our cars. I know my G37 and FX50 backup screen goes away the moment it’s out of reverse.
