It's not a tuner car, like a Civic, although it can be tuned extensively.
It could be considered a "regular" sports car, although that's a pretty broad term and the 370Z really doesn't have a lot in common with a Miata. This may be the reason the general public gets confused.

Mine feels like it could get to 200, but it's waaaaaayyy too scary up there to try. Would probably take flight and kill a bunch of people before I could get there.

This is a tough question. There are only a few cars in this segment and people tend to want to compare them to Mustangs, which I feel is equivalent to comparing apples to oranges. In my humble opinion the 370Z is in the same class as a lot of roadsters but outperforms all of them. IE: Audi TT, BMW Z3 and the Porsche Boxster (the Z doensn't outperform the GTS).

Unfortunately there are a lot of young kids buying these cars and destroying them..... um.....er....I mean heavily modifying them, and not for the better. This is common though at this point in the life cycle of all sports cars. As they age the price comes down and the audience opens up to who can afford them. If you have the mental fortitude, check out the 370Z Facebook forum. It is chocked full of knucklehead kids doing all sorts of unspeakable things to their 370Zs. Eventually though they will get bored and move on to the next car they can afford. I plan to outlast all of them and will own this car until the day I drop dead. In twenty years from now I'm gonna be the old guy at the Z shows with the awesome classic 2009 370Z.

Overall I believe the general public knows little about this car. They think it is more expensive and faster then it is. Other car enthusiasts who have never driven one tend to really knock it though. They have no clue what it is capable of and always want to compare it to muscle cars.

LOL, you need more aero. Just like I am going to. I just don't want to put a big wang and splitter on the car. Too much attention for my liking. I do like the looks though.

From my experience, they don't know anything about it. Per various dates "what is that".

I know I'm splitting hairs here, but I'd place the Z in the Porsche Boxster category, the TT and Z3 not so much. The TT is such an overpriced turdwagon!

I looked at all three when I was shopping for a car. For me the Z3 was too much of an old fart car, the TT was slow and overpriced (loved the looks though) and I couldn't afford the Boxster GTS. I had no interest in the other trim levels. It was pretty much a no brainer. I never bothered to look at the Mustang or the Camaro and I had zero interest in anything Mopar. I wasn't looking for a muscle car.

It's kind of an "in-between", niche, car. The Euro 2-seaters are closer relations than the American muscle cars, and, until the Stinger came out, the (defunct) Genesis Coupe was its closest cousin, although the BMW Z4 M Coupe is a good match. Japan doesn't produce anything close in horsepower, until the supra shows up. There are maybe, what, 4 cars in its niche? (300 to 400 hp, rear wheel drive, 2-seater) The next step up, to me, would be a low-end Porche or Corvette. I have had people (ok, women) ask me if it was a Porche.
If I have to call it anything, it's usually "2-seat sports car".

I try and help them, but its a fruitless effort. Why anyone would just pole FB for car advice, especially mechanical advice is beyond me. How about joining a forum that has searchable documented information and that has a member base of diverse individuals from all over the world? Anyone know of a site like that for the 370Z? They are too lazy to search and want instant gratification. Makes me crazy. At least once a week I see this: "Yo, wut is da bestest intake fur ma whip bruh?"

They seem more interested in bags, camber, and wraps. Oh and windshield banners.

It's funny when you see one of those idiots make it to the forums, they usually don't last long.
