300 miles on a full tank of gas
So I filled up my tank for the first time yesterday, I got 300 miles. My round trip to work is 28 miles on the freeway. I didn't get that amount with my 06 350Z M/T and it had a 20 gallon tank.
So what do you think? Personally I think that's pretty good. The rest of you 370Z owners post how many miles you get on your first full tank. |
I get between 320 and 340 on my 90 300zx. It's got a 19.8Gal tank. Not bad for a 19 year old car. But the way I drive, I get about 2-5 MPG more than anyone else would. The trick is to keep the RPMs below 2300 when you're not performance driving.
I assume I'll get about 20-22MPG with the 370z on the streets and 26-30 on the freeway. I don't ALWAYS drive like I'm old as dust, but I tend to stay around the speed limit most of the time. |
Thats pretty good for a 3.7L V6!!
|
How big is the tank in the 370z? If it's the same as your 350z, 20 gallons, 300/20 comes out to be 15 MPG.
|
Smaller than the 350's... That's part of the weight reduction Nissan did. I believe it's 19.2 now.
|
The tank in the 370 is 19 gallons, the gauge said I still had 30 miles left before 'E'. I have a phobia of getting low on gas so I NEVER run it on fumes. According to my receipt I pumped 16.86 gallons so actually I still had 2 gallons in the tank, but like I said I have a phobia....

Yep... Should NEVER let it run out of gas... Bad for the pump, bad for the injectors, and it CAN bad for the motor (if it doesn't know how to compensate for the lean fuel.)
Still comes out to about 18MPG. You've been lead-footing, huh? |
What is this? You guys don't know how to calculate the MPG without relying on those extremely inaccurate gas gauges? According to Educ8r's number, his car is getting 17.76mpg. This is assuming that the dealer filled it all the way up.
17.76mpg is not that good when you considered what Nissan claimed and that he has 28 hwy mileage. Actually, it's pretty bad. Thats not even hitting the "city only" gas mileage that Nissan claimed. A few possibilities. Either the dealer didn't fill it up when they deliver it or the number is overrated by Nissan, or that Educ8r is driving like he stole it. |
^^^ OR!!!! The motor isn't fully broken in yet. (Yeah, I did the numbers too, and came up with the same results... just rounded up to 18)
If the motor isn't broken in and/or Educ8r is just having "fun" with the car, his mileage is definitely going to suck! |
The motor has to be broken in, then the gas mileage will surely go up. I learned that from doing some research over at the Honda Fit forums.
|
I never buy a car expecting the gas mileage posted on the sticker. As of now the car is averaging 18 as stated by Nissan. The dealership did fill the tank. If I were worried about MPG I would have purchased a HONDA CIVIC.
As stated in an earlier post, I live in city with 2.2 million people, in traffic there is constant braking. Oh yeah and I'm not afraid to go the speed limit. When the car is broken in and it still averages 18 MPG I'm cool with that, if it doesn't I'm cool with that too. |
The sticker said my Solstice would get 19/26MPG... I beat that by a LONG shot. I get 25MPG on the streets and 41 on the freeway! (TESTED! Did the numbers myself instead of relying on the computer)
|
I put in a half tank last night, I will figure out the mileage next time I fill her up. BTW not being able to open the fuel flap from inside sucks. I live in Oregon and apparently we are too retarded to pump our own gas, so now I have to get out and open it for the gas pumping fool.

If in fact that the mpg does not improve, then we get to the issue of what you expect from the mpg quote of the manufacture. If the number in real life is different than claimed, then its called faults ad. Just like what RX-8 did with the hp rating. They gave money back to buyers. The fact sheet is what it is. The fact. Now I know that mileage may vary, but like I said before, the number as of right now is below average (not that good) based on the claimed number. Since your added stop-n-go freeway mileage, then i guess it changes my end a little on the mpg. |
I stated my drive to work (roundtrip) was 28 miles, not 28 mpg!

Gang,
This past summer we vacationed with a road trip out west from the Midwest. We drove our 03 350Z 7000 miles and the car averaged 28MPG and change overall. That included the mountains and the flat lands and speeds from 65 to 80+. Plus it also included spirited driving from San Francisco north to Oregon on the coast highway (Route 1):driving:(That highway was a ball in a Z). There were several tanks that we got over 32. In the thin air of the Rockies we were down to tanks at 24MPG. Pikes Peak was a blast of a drive also (wife didn't like the the white knuckling). |
I get about 375 miles on my G37
|
It REALLY does depend on the driver. And the VQ motors (especially the VQ37) adjust to your driving habits. Chances are that my mileage is going to be pretty good, and performance won't be great because I drive like a grandpa.

That's great Educ8r. Gas mileage is always least of my worries but it's good to know you can get 300 miles out of a tank. I always think gas mileage debates are completely worthless. If you can afford a $35,000 vehicle, you can afford the gas. The difference (getting 18 MPG as oppose to 25 MPG) is such a small fraction of money, it's not even worth working up brain cells.
Here's a simple comparison how small MPG debates are worth (IMO) 12000 miles/year 18 MPG = 666 gallons of fuel used 12000 miles/year 25 MPG = 480 Gallons of fuel used Difference = 180 gallons X $1.80 (gallon price) = $320? :ugh: That's how much I probably spent in 2 weeks in junk food :shakes head:. I know I have to start eating healthy. But you get the picture. ;) |
hmm not bad at all when i drive to my girls house depending on traffic i use 1/4 tank to 3/4 tank funny part? its only about 110 miles ie the main reason i want to get rid of my evo ix haha gotta love getting like 8mpg damnit!
|
$1.80?!? LUCKY! We're still above $2 here in Los Angeles (edit: for premium). But you're right, the price break isn't much to worry about. I just HATE filling up at a station because it takes so damn long. :D So the longer the tank lasts the better.
|
3rd fill up so far, average MPG is 19, again this is better than what my 06 350 M/T was getting
|
You're DEFINITELY going to get better economy with this new motor and trans. There's no doubt about it. When I get mine and it's broken in, I'm going to drive from Los Angeles, to Las Vegas, to Phoenix, and back to Los Angeles. Then I'll report my highway mileage.
|
i know on my G37... after about 5k miles the MPGs went up rapidly.. let it brake in.. it WILL make a difference on these motors.
|
My Trans Am got crummy economy until the motor was broken in. Then it got GREAT economy.
Most 6-speed V8 LS1 combos get about 32-36MPG on the highway. |
How to find MPG
Sorry if this sounds like a know-it-all....but The way that I have always measured MPG is easy......I fill up and force-fill.......the tank.....dont worry about doing this, I have been doing it for decades and never had a problem with any car. By force-filling I mean: After you think your tank is full, I shake the car and let the gas level go down. Any car will hold and extra 2 to 3 gallons..........it may take about 5 minutes to get all the air out of the tank. By doing this, you get an accurate level to refill the tank on the next fill.
Record the miles till the next fill.........and then you have an accurate level to measure from...........the next time you force-fill your are going to know that the level is the same as before.....as in FULL Say you go 350 miles and then force-fill again.....it takes 13 gallons.....since you know the tank has been FULL to the same point...you know that you have used 13 gallons....and your MPG was 26.92 MPG To me this is the most accurate way to get an MPG for a car........I guess I am Squirrly but I do this almost every tank.... |
Im getting around 240MPT and that is before I can go past 4k RPM. Someone help me.
|
How much FPT (fun per tank) are you getting... that's the only appropriate question.
|
bahhh 300 miles from a full 19 gal tank isn't so bad... although i wasn't impressed. Do you rev it up high once in a while? or is this the result from revving 3000 and below only?
Either way it cant be worse then american cars...:p 3.7 v6 engine from an American car would probably be at the most 200 and average 150 compared to the Z's 300 average. This is how I make myself feel better.:icon17: |
thats low...i ran my gas till it blinked empty and filled it all the way up...ran it again till empty. I got 472 miles. thats all highway miles avg of 80-90mph.

When you fill your tank....there is a lot of air that is trapped in your tank and it goes to the top of the gas tank...... this is what can cause condensation in cold weather.....and you dont have to shake the car.......lol.....but it does help to shake the car because it helps work the air out of your tank faster......... |

/sigh... what I meant was to point out that your post seemed to unfairly belittle Ssqpolo's comment. So, if I'm mistaken about your intentions, I apologize... it's either the grammer or the math... not sure which needs work.
|
No need to apologize ..........but does he really thing that he could have gotten 80 MPG.......?
