Were the OEM windows altered with any aftermarket tint?

In California, side windows can be tinted but they have to allow 70% of light into the vehicle. I should knock on wood, I have limo tint (5%) on mine.

Two relatively simple ways to get of out of if that is the law, make darn sure.

1.) Go to court with print out of law in hand, make sure it references the section. Plead not guilty to the charge. Present evidence.
2.) Hire a lawyer. Let them deal with it.

Also, good call on signing the ticket, you are just acknowledging receipt. There is no need to escalate with a cop on the side of the road, ever. It's their party and their rules, they get to determine what the outcome is.

If what you are saying is true, the officer who pulled you over is an example of why people think some cops are out of control.

35% is legal on side window's in SC....some people go 20 & some as low as 5,,,,I chose to stick with the 35% Scorpion tint all around...to "Old" to be ticketed on this one.

The law in NV is 50% and I have 20% tint. I have Veteran plates so the cops don't even bother with a second glance. I got waved thru a DUI check point and they even thanked me for my service.

Why would you refuse to sign the ticket? That's a pointless gesture. Did you think that that would make the cop change his mind? It's not an admission of guilt - it only acknowledges that you got the ticket. It means nothing in court, it's not going to stop the citation, and only creates problems for you. As you found out.

Exactly. Doesn't refusing to sign a citation automatically mean a free trip downtown, with a charge on your record? Window tint is not a good hill to die on.

In California, the front driver side and passenger side windows cannot be tinted at all. It's a safety issue for law enforcement. It's been the law in CA for years.
