When I restarted the problem was gone. I only have 1800 miles on the car and the oil temp was 220. This has me worried.
AK had this issue some time ago, and its never happened again, some others have as well.

Just wanted to jump into this dead thread and mention I had the issue tonight as well in so anyone else searching can see this thread like I did.

Starting from a stoplight I was distracted by the cop staring at my lack of front plate and attempted to start off while still in fifth. From there I of course stalled, quickly restarted the car and tried pulling off in first only to get this limp mode, tried pulling off on a side street and restarting it letting the car sit for approx a minute but made no change. From there I thought it might be fuel related as I only had 30 miles till empty so I got gas, backing into the slot for the pump. After that the car was fine and has driven fine ever since.

Cliffs:

Attempted to start in 5th and stalled, happened directly after restarting
Couldnt rev past 2500 RPM or give more than approx 25% throttle without it hitting a weird rev limiter
Just shutting down the car made no change
After reversing, getting gas and letting the car sit for a few mins all was back to normal.

Yup, that sounds very familiar to mine. I was in 2nd gear but thought I was in 1st. I was at s the supermarket. This guy waves at me to go and I punch it in 2nd. Of course I bog down and hear a thud. After that this happened. I wonder if this is a some kind of protection mode that kicks in.

However, I haven't been able to replicate this issue ever again.

It's possible that it momentarily got an out of phase signal between the crankshaft position sensor and the camshaft position sensor. If that happens it disables VVEL and goes into limp mode. A full shutdown should reset it.

I think its the traction control freaking out for a moment. It has not occurred in my Z but it did in my G and it does not have VVEL. Accidentally started out in second and stalled the car. Quickly restarted, my "slip" light started blinking and the car would not rev. Stopped, shut it down again and it still would not rev. Shut it down again and all was well. This happened during my first year of ownership and just like you guys said it has not happened again. Although, I have not stalled the car again either.

The G35 didn't have VVEL but it did have its predecessor CVTC which operates in a similar fashion. Actually CVTC had the advantage that it could control the exhaust valves in addition to the intake which made cruising around at low RPM's a little better, but the control of the intake valves was far less sophisticated.

This happened to me today. The car was running great all day and for some reason it would not go pass 2500RPM. I put it in reverse still didn't fix it, turned it off and hasn't done anything. I haven't tried reseting the ECU since others have told me to take it to the dealership to find out the code. Being new to Germany I don't know the nearest dealership so I might just have to reset it in the morning. Hoping this works.

A similar issue happened with my maxima, it wouldn't rev past 2500 rpm. I disconnected the battery terminals for about 5 mins and it corrected it. Only happened once and hasen't happened again.

This happened to the woman last week. She was driving down the freeway and it locked her into a 2500 rpm limit in any gear. I told her to take it straight to the dealer. They checked it in the morning and couldn't reproduce it. On a side note, they did perform a navigation software update.

I just got this issue last night. i was driving home and the z went to limp mode and would not let me pass 2500 rpm, i drove home like that. this morning on my way to work the same issue came up. I did notice that the sports mode was on and happened when i stepped on the throttle at a low rpm, so during the drive back home from work i turned sports mode off and drove it a little hard and no issues occurred. I am taking it to nissan tomorrow morning to double check.
