You would be very surprised at how much the shifter assembly has to do with the transmission reliability. Believe me, I learnt this the hard way with past cars.

While a little notchy, I think the Z's shifter is pretty darn good, as I also own a 17 BMW M2. Yes the one that all the car mags fawn over. And they're correct, it's an excellent car with a lot of things superior to the Z, but I'd take the Z's shifter over the M2's anytime. Last edited by Magic Bus; 07-01-2017 at 04:27 PM. I like the distance between gears on the Z, I had a short shifter on my Acura TL but the distance OEM was really far in between gears. I'm not sure if I would want to miss shift with a short shifter and I image the difference doesn't warrant the amount of work it takes to do so, but I guess to each their own, personally I rest my elbow on the center compartment and am able to shift with the twist of the wrist, good luck OP.

Honestly, I like the stock shifter in the Z just fine.
I've owned two very different Miata's over the years, 5 years each, a 2002 and a 1991. The shifters in those Miata's are excellent, everyone knows that too. Funny thing is, the one in the Z reminds me of that Miata shifter. It's not as short, and it's not as precise, but it's close. I had a VooDoo knob on the 2002 and a JoyFast knob on the 1991. Just a simple flick of the wrist and you could run up and down the gears quickly and easily. The Z's shifter isn't too far off from those. Maybe one day I'll get a shorter, weighted knob for the Z, but I can assure you one thing, it won't be a metal one again like those in the Miata's. Living down here in Florida, grabbing those knobs is the equivalent of putting your hand on a stove-top burner on high! My only complaint with this car about smooth shifting is the darn clutch pedal. Even with the RJM pedal installed, I still don't have it dialed in right and still get jerky shifts through 1st to 3rd.

I come from an S2k which is arguably one of the best shifters I have ever felt. People who say the stock shifter on the 370z is good enough have not experienced a good one i gurantee that. I have the TWM SS with a weighted knob and it is one of my best mods. I feel like people who have synchro issues on this car skip shift. Oh an OP dont cheap out in this part and do yourself a favor and get TWM.

I just had my TWM short shifter installed and I love it. Yep, it's notchy but I love the notchy mechanical feel. It feels more like what a sports car should feel like (imo).

I have the TWM short shifter as well as their Big Type R knob in graphite (matches interior perfectly btw), paired with a set of Z1 MTEC shifter springs. Short throws, crisper engagement and with the springs, a more mechanical feel. Darn close to Miata (14 year owner) like, but what is?

Yes.. the Z's shift action is fine, but it is not like the Miata.
With the proper transmission fluid, the Z can be quite smooth. Quote:
