What does the shifter have to do with the clutch? I've also never really gotten the synchro argument either? Is the thought you'll be shifting so fast that you'll wear out the synchros quicker (you aren't speed shifting all the time)? Easy enough to throw the stock shifter back in if you started to have a problem. Either way both the clutch and synchros are most likely going to be consider a wear item right? Maybe I'll eat crow later on this one, but I've rebuilt a lot several manual transmission in my garage, if something happens, I'll most likely be the one fixing it anyways. |

You would be very surprised at how much the shifter assembly has to do with the transmission reliability. Believe me, I learnt this the hard way with past cars.

TWM ftw! I have their short shifter and their competition long knob. I have been rocking it for almost for years without any issues. I tried the heavy knob and it didn't work for me as well as the tall knob and short shifter.
Don't cheap out on parts you will f up your car and you will end up spending three times the money you were trying to save. If can't afford to do it right don't at all! Take it from a guy that has bought and re-bought thousands of dollars in parts and labor.

Honestly, I like the stock shifter in the Z just fine.
I've owned two very different Miata's over the years, 5 years each, a 2002 and a 1991. The shifters in those Miata's are excellent, everyone knows that too. Funny thing is, the one in the Z reminds me of that Miata shifter. It's not as short, and it's not as precise, but it's close. I had a VooDoo knob on the 2002 and a JoyFast knob on the 1991. Just a simple flick of the wrist and you could run up and down the gears quickly and easily. The Z's shifter isn't too far off from those. Maybe one day I'll get a shorter, weighted knob for the Z, but I can assure you one thing, it won't be a metal one again like those in the Miata's. Living down here in Florida, grabbing those knobs is the equivalent of putting your hand on a stove-top burner on high! ![]() My only complaint with this car about smooth shifting is the darn clutch pedal. Even with the RJM pedal installed, I still don't have it dialed in right and still get jerky shifts through 1st to 3rd. ![]()

Yes.. the Z's shift action is fine, but it is not like the Miata.
With the proper transmission fluid, the Z can be quite smooth. Quote:

I just had my TWM short shifter installed and I love it. Yep, it's notchy but I love the notchy mechanical feel. It feels more like what a sports car should feel like (imo).

I have the TWM short shifter as well as their Big Type R knob in graphite (matches interior perfectly btw), paired with a set of Z1 MTEC shifter springs. Short throws, crisper engagement and with the springs, a more mechanical feel. Darn close to Miata (14 year owner) like, but what is?
