Anybody run out of gas yet?

Has any body run their Z completely out of gas yet? If so, did it happen right around the time guage indicated empty? I'm just kinda curious to see how

I'm just kinda curious to see how close the fuel guage display is compared to actual amount of fuel left in the tank when you'e almost out of gas.

One of my other cars seems to have about a gallon left in the tank when the guage says empty but the other car is damn sure empty when the guage says empty.... This got me to wondering about how the Z is in this scenario, but I don't want to run it out of gas.

Just drive around your neighborhood with a gas can in the back. I had to do it when my trans am's fuel gauge started slipping

I'm not curious enough (or too lazy) to actually run the car out on my own. There has to be someone in the forum who has done it by now... if only they're not too embarassed to admit they ran out of gas.

I read in a thread yesterday that some people have run their indicator till it was out of lights and still made it like 20 more miles. The miles left on tank was already at 0 because it's based averages and not definitives.

True, at two dots/lights showing, the warning comes on and the tank will still have a little over 2 gallons in it. At the combined hwy/city average, you can go another 45 or 50 miles. It will hit no dots/lights in another 30 miles or so, so about 20 miles left after zero dots. Bottom line, with the safety cushion Nissan has left us, you'd have to really push it to end up out of gas.

yeah i've gotten myself worried before, but 20-ish or more miles after the display reads 0 and the dots are all gone is right. i was just barely hitting the gas at that point to be safe and i'm sure any sort of WOT driving would've left me stranded.

simple, fill up the car BEFORE the gauge is down to empty. why do so many people wait until the car is running on fumes before they fill up?

Don't run it to empty because if you get on the gas you might find yourself stranded due to the tank design not allowing the last of the fuel to be used under certain conditions. Fill up at 1/4 tank or above if you want to avoid a surprise.

I usually fill up when i'm between 1/2 and 1/4 tank. I never wait until i'm on fumes before filling up unless I have a complete brain fart and forget to fill up earlier.

I posed the question because I was just curious as to how much I should sweat when the guage starts to get real low. Some cars are more forgiving than others in this situation and I hadn't yet heard where the 370 fit in.

Thanks to the members who have been brave enough to admit that they ran out of gas... especially in this forum.

Technically I didn't run out of gas, I just couldn't use the gas I had

If you're a gas mileage nazi, you would only fill halfway up and run it nearly out every time. Gasoline weighs about 6.3 lb per gallon (assuming premium). Running only 9 gal max would save you nearly 60 lbs. LOL.
