Wanton spending had me low on cash until payday (today, huzzah!) so I was milking the tank for all it was worth last night...

At around 2 dots I had 20-some miles range.

Just before 1 dot the range turned into a flashing --- (not zeros as shown above).

Never got to none-dots, but when I filled up it only took about 17.5 gallons I was disappointed! I'm like, man I had almost 2 gallons left at one dot and --- range? Still... I'd rather not push it. Getting much under one dot you run the risk of not getting it started again.

So I've heard mixing different gas brands isn't the best idea and you should run it fairly low before fill up. On the other hand I imagine running out completely could be bad for the engine... any credence (Clearwater or otherwise) to that theory?

How low do you get it? If you constantly keep running on fumes you might have an issue. Aslong as fluid is in the tank and being sucked by the pump it should keep it cool. A pump doesn't know the difference if there is a full talk or quarter as long as theres enough in there to do its job. Its the same story with any related pump. If you are pumping nothing you're gonna overheat

Never go low:

1. If you ever get stuck in traffic, u r dead.
2. Ever get called on an emergency and find out you are low on gas? Every minute counts and you don't want to to be looking at a gas station.
3. Ever lost in a bad neighborhood?
4. Ever with your love ones in the middle of the night and you are in between cities?
5. Anyone remember the California Northridge earthquake? All gas stations were down! You can have all the $ in the world but no gas to buy. I am sure other states have had calamities where $ is worthless.
1/4 tank is too late if you drive enthusiastically with this car, it can die on a right hand or up hill turn. Anything less than 1/2 a tank and I fill it. You can drive it down to zero dots if you drive like an old lady.

nah it doesn't work. I haven't run completely out of gas but the gauge will say 30mi then a couple mins later it will say 25, and then out of no where it will just read "---".

That's exactly right. Fuel in the tank assists in cooling the pump.

If you're a gas mileage nazi, you would only fill halfway up and run it nearly out every time. Gasoline weighs about 6.3 lb per gallon (assuming premium). Running only 9 gal max would save you nearly 60 lbs. LOL.

Actually, I completely ran out of gas one day. I went to work and then had a final to take right after I got out. But, was running on empty already where I really needed to get gas so I told myself on the way to school I was going to fill up. Half way there I found a Chevron and right when I was across the street waiting for the light to turn green my car started choking and gave up on me. I had to run across the street and buy the damn gas tanks and put in the gas manually. I was like what's the chances of the car stopping right before you get to Chevron. I learned my lesson and never let it go past a quarter of a tank remaining. My advice bro don't let it happen !!!

If so, did it happen right around the time guage indicated empty?

I'm just kinda curious to see how close the fuel guage display is compared to actual amount of fuel left in the tank when you'e almost out of gas.

One of my other cars seems to have about a gallon left in the tank when the guage says empty but the other car is damn sure empty when the guage says empty.... This got me to wondering about how the Z is in this scenario, but I don't want to run it out of gas.

Yes, you most likely don't want to run it out of gas. Most electric fuel pumps these days will reach the end of their days when run dry.
