HELP MILLIONS of SCRATCHES

so i was out the other day and in nova ( nothern virginia ) we had a whole night of ice/sleeting rain. my car had been outside for a while and had to drive it home. this morning i checked to see for scratches... and my god there are MILLIONS of those little scratches you see on black cars.. any suggestions on getting them out or anything? need your input thanks !

are you talking about swirls? if so, you'll need to polish that out.

Get used to it because I have always had black cars and my 370 is black!Without a doubt the worst paint I have ever dealt with and I grew up in body shops. If a bird as much as looks at the car in the summer it immediately eats into the clear coat and can't be removed.Could wet sand but who knows how many coats of this junk is on the car?Need at least 3 to 4 coats of clear on a car to start wet sanding and buffing. If less can burn through the clear coat by sanding or buffing.
Some on here have said what do you expect for a $30 to $40,000 sports car.Well that is pure bull!I've had $20,000Toyota pickups in black and the paint is GREAT even after 10 years!
This clear coat is pure junk!Nissan for sure cut corners here and dropped the ball.

Your body shop didn't work on Fords? :icon14:

Nisan paint hs been bad since about 2000, most Max's and Z's from 2002ish build on without a clear bra the front ends are blasted. Not to mention how easy the rest of the body scratches..........:eek2:

cptspeed 12-09-2009 04:52 PM

My exes 92 sentra had a garbage paint job. Fords paint fades badly. If your Z is a daily driver, or lots of hwy miles, you will paint it one day.

If you guys had just gotten yellow you wouldn't have these silly issues.

Never see any clear coat as bad as this on the new Z.Fords included!

FricFrac 12-10-2009 11:23 PM

The clear coat is average - the VW's have an even softer clear. Its also give and take - the softer clears scratch easier but are more resistant to chipping. However if you've got a rock flying at your bumper at 100+ MPH good luck.... The best paints seem to be the European cars esp German. But then again they are pretty good when it comes to chemical engineering. There are lots of other cars out there with the same average clear coat as our cars.

Oh and clay bar has nothing to do with taking scratches out - it takes impurities embeded in your clear coat out - its not used as an abrasive but almost like a tack cloth works on a dusty surface.

Menzerna IP + Porter Cable. Then my favorite is Klasse AIO and a few layers of SG on top of that. It will look like new.

The clear coat on my silver Z is beautiful. I'm getting angry.

LETSGOEERS06 12-11-2009 12:23 PM

wax polish that out

cambo370z 12-11-2009 03:43 PM

i've had a honda, toyota, ford, 2 nissans, and now a corvette. nissan by far had the worst clear..my altima and my 350z had the most scratches easily. my corvette has the best clearcoat of all..a detailer i know also told me that the corvette has one of the thickest clears for a domestic...too bad nissan has to be this way..the 370z is a great car but the front end will look crappy in a year!

How... let me let you know how, I ran a service dept for many years and I am a member of a Maxima group and Z group in my area. When I ran the dept I would get complaints about it and see with my own eye's the front ends where blasted. Also when we met up at our meets alot of the bro's would complain about the paint as well and they knew I was a manager for a Nissan Service Dept and use to bi""h about it. Thats how I know.

NXTAZEE 12-11-2009 11:34 PM

Ahhhh, you are very wise grasshopper.

zrider -

You have great suggestions about polishing from previous posters.

Another suggestion would be to invest in a quality car cover if you park outside at home. I ended up doing that and it's a pain sometimes, but it's worth knowing that your car is protected from the elements while you're warm and toasty inside.

Still another is to protect the most vulnerable areas:

So true. On my '07 350z, I had a clear bra installed the first week. I only covered the bumper and headlights only. When I traded it in for the 370z, I noticed quite a few tiny chips all on the front end of the unprotected hood. We took a heat gun to remove the clearbra and the covered areas were like brand new.

When I got my 370z, I immediate got clearbra installed. Pictured below is of when I picked the car up from the dealership and the areas I have covered: headlights, mirrors, front bumper, lower bumper, 24" of front part of the hood, triangular piece to the side of the headlight and fender area, A pillar, both mud flaps, and the area behind the wheel openings on the rear fender.

The guy that did my clearbra said that he has clients that covered their ENTIRE car. $$$$.
