370Z VDC vs 86/BRZ VSC SPORT-TRACK

Hey everyone, I previously owned a 2013 base 370Z for about a year before it got totaled due to a hydroplaning crash and then I picked up a 2015 FR-S. After the lease is up I'm looking to go most likely go back to the Fairlady, maybe look for a Nismo.

I remember VDC would kick in very harshly and felt like hitting a puddle of water at speed when it would cut the power/brake the car not allowing you push the car in a controlled manner with a safety net. Obviously if you turn if off then you are on your own without any nannies.

On the FR-S/86/BRZ there is a VSC SPORT/TRACK mode which increases the threshold before the nannies kick in so you can at least kick the tail out before reeling you in if you go too far and allows wheel slip without the feeling of hitting a brick wall so you can have fun on the street yet still be safe and mindful of others safety.

So what I'm wondering is from the guys that owned the 370Z for many years and are experienced with how the car works, do you know if it is possible to achieve the same leniency with the Z's VDC that is implemented on the Toyobaru? Or is it all or nothing with VDC either being ON or OFF?

I believe if you have ECUTEK with the traction control feature you can adjust the amount of wheel spin there is until the nannies kick in.

I don't use VDC. Just run da right tires and drive within ur limits.

Why did you take such a big step down from a 370Z to a FR-S?

I didnt think an 86 NEEDED VDC, surprised it even engages. :stirthepot:

Put Advan Neova AD08Rs on and in summer you won't need VDC at all.
At least the 350Z DE was very hard to break loose.

The frs' skinny little tires break traction with ease, easier and at lower rpms than the Z. I drove one several times and it was a blast, no Zcar, but a fun toy nonetheless.

What? My DE was sooooooooooo fun. I had BFGoodrich KDW's on there. Fat ones too. Gripped like a gorilla. Could spin it at will through 1st and 2nd.

That was my biggest problem with the Z, the VDC was too intrusive and wouldn't allow enough slip.

As for those saying VDC off, no way in hell. I had Mich. PSS on my NISMO and with VDC off 1st and 2nd would get you dangerously sideways when flooring it going straight. I remember one time I the rear was badly spinning when I attempt to launch the car. And I'm not talking about dumping the clutch or anything. It was more of a roll out of first and then nailing it. So I short shifted to 2nd to attempt to gain traction and it nearly sent the car spinning. Never could figure out why I could never get traction with the car. Was suspect by some on this forum that give my location, Vegas, that the roads were always dusty making it harder for traction.

either way, with VDC on the car was no fun and with vdc off the car had no traction in a straight line. That being said, VDC off during auto-x and it was pure joy. But trying to drag race the car, forget it. My 09 370z was no different but I always thought it was the stock tires. Even tried a 2013 NISMO and it was the same thing.

Ours differentials are garbage TBH, with a new diff and tune you can achieve what you never could with a Z, I've been lucky enough to spin around a very nicely tuned and upgraded Z on an airstrip with a Qualfe Diff, exhaust, supercharged, etc.. and the traction was incredible even with the supercharger kicking in lower RPM's it felt stable and almost like youd handle in a video game

That being said, im sure the OP would gain an incredible amount of control from a ECUTek tune because of the traction control options and a different diff.
