front fangs

the krylon on my front fangs is chipping, any other alternatives yet? Vinyl? some sort of overlay or sumthing? cheers

JB1 12-07-2009 09:50 PM

I had a clear bra (Ventureshield) put on, protects it well but there are 2 downsides:

- Gives it a shine (I originally painted the fangs mat black)
- Fangs are not 100% covered by the clear bra, installer could not get the material in the far corners, so there still is a small edge towards the back exposed.

It shouldn't be chipping, short of just crap that hits it hard enough....

So:

1) Stop tailgating. Seriously, this is where most of the chips originate...
2) If it's actually chipping/peeling, then take it to the dealer as there is a flaw with the paint.

whattt how is that considering Rice lol. It looks good when the fangs are blacked out. But that's just my 2 cents.

kenchan 12-07-2009 10:31 PM

if you like that style, why not get the evo-r CF one? :)

JakeZ34 12-07-2009 10:46 PM

personally I wouldn't take a spray can to my car at any cost. But I was recently involved in an accident so I told the body shop not to paint the fang area (copy Modshack hehe). But I believe the Evo-R is a stick on right? I never like stick on carbon fiber stuff, it makes it a bit thicker (I know I'm picky!) But yes the CF does look great too in the fang area.

kenchan 12-07-2009 10:53 PM

yah, the evo-r is a stick on. it too makes your car look like

;)

Using spray paint on your car = epic facepalm.

Doing cheap appearance mods = rice (for asian cars), redneck/hick-mod for american cars (or trucks)

Simota did a nice job with his using spray. It's the quality of the paint and the quality of the guy applying the paint that counts.

I also would not call painting the fang area "rice". It's a subjective appearance mod, big deal, not like he put blue running lights on it or a fart can.

Richie 12-08-2009 09:50 AM

maybe i used the car too soon im sure i read krylon gets chip resistant in over a certain amount of hours/days or somthing

I think redneck is brush painted on.

kenchan 12-08-2009 01:06 PM

i think redneck version is called corn...

Liquid_G 12-08-2009 02:49 PM

Or brushed on with corn.

Don't think it's rice at all because of appearance mods. I'd call it rice if he had those led tail lights on civics or a giant wing for no reason. Painting part of your car black isn't rice. Unless he painted the hood black with spray can.

Richie 12-08-2009 04:54 PM

im hopeing i can get it wrapped in matte black vinyl, that would be sweet

Unless you can offer the man some help with his issue, such as tips to stop it from happening, then I'm sure you're just wasting his time and he would appreciate if you left his thread.

On topic: I would start by sanding it all down again. Any decently adhered paint will stay and the bad stuff should sand right off. Then after ensuring you have a good surface wipe it down with some mineral spirits to make sure the surface is clean and try again.

Rnmovr12 12-08-2009 06:36 PM

i spray painted my jeep OD. i guess that makes me pretty redneck :rofl2:

id suggest sanding it down with some 80 grit then smooth with 200/400. from there hit it with some primer then the flat/matte black.

ive ran mine through thick tree branches without it chipping or scratching off

CBRich 12-08-2009 07:00 PM

Rnmovr12 has it right. Just make sure not to get too thick with the coats of primer or paint.

Well since your in TX I think that makes it more like goatroper doesnt it? Did you use spray cans or a paint sprayer? And di you do the whole jeep? Spray cans would seem expensive and time consuming.

Rnmovr12 12-08-2009 07:31 PM

spray cans and spray primer. im almost done with it. the last couple cans i bought turned out to be a bit of a different OD than the others so i gotta return them for some new ones. time consuming not really and ive only spent like ~200 if even that on it. that includes tape paper sand paper primer paint masks and whatever else i needed to use.

sorry for the thread jack OP

Damn...Wagner Power Sprayer $110 plus a gallon or 2 of some good paint...ah well, it's all good and in the pic looks pretty good!

Rnmovr12 12-08-2009 07:41 PM

i guess i should have looked around at sprayers a bit more hahaha. shes alittle dirty in the pic and the paint isnt perfect but i didnt expect it to be and i didnt want to nice of a paint anyways because of how much i beat on it. this way if i do get a big scratch just just whip out the sander and spray it real quick :)

Zsteve 12-08-2009 07:42 PM

pretty cool looking, I think Ive seen a guy with the old army style jeeps and he had it painted like the jeeps in the WWII movies, looked pretty cool.
