Short Leg problems, how do you guys deal with it?

Hello,

I have pretty short legs (also being 5'6 doesn't help) so when I sit in my Z I have to move the seat quite far forward to the point where my body is super close to the steering wheel, which I've heard is bad because airbags and etc.

However if I don't move it that close it's really awkward for me to try to press the clutch pedal all the way down because my legs are extended fully straight

Anyone else have this problem?

SouthArk370Z 03-09-2017 05:33 PM

I've used pieces of wood on the pedals before.

I usually make her ride shotgun.

Just sayin' :icon17:

I used to be four feet, but now I am 6'2".

Not sure if any of these apply to the 370Z, but worth looking into.

damn lol didnt expect the response to be so hostile

yall got jokes tho

enkei2k 03-09-2017 09:28 PM

5'6 isn't that short...no offense, I'm trying to picture someone with short legs but a longer top body and it's kind of hard for me to...

PS - I'm 5'7 and a half-ish and I don't think I have that issue...although I do drive like a granny style (hunched over the steering wheel) sometimes just for fun or when I'm trying to look for parking, etc..

SINISTER 03-09-2017 09:51 PM

I am just at 5 7 on a good day......no problem in the Z and I am not up close to the steering wheel at all. However, when I push in the clutch my leg is fully extended ...

TreeSemdyZee 03-09-2017 10:05 PM

I'm 5' 6" with 29" inseam. No problem for me. I do tilt the seat back because I don't like to sit straight up.

Hostile? Really?

I did not see a single hostile response. Well OK maybe Ken's, but that's normal. :stirthepot:

And honestly, I used to be 4". No lie.

At least no one has posted a link to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrjStSqu_w4

Jayhovah 03-09-2017 10:29 PM

Does the RJM clutch pedal allow the pedal to be adjusted physically higher? or just the engagement point?

Perhaps a nice automatic corolla would be better suited...

These clutches typically catch and release right near the top and don't need to be pressed anywhere near the floorboards. Heck I have a 30" inseam which isn't terribly long and would have to tip toe it to the floorboards, and I'm just barely under 6'

Zoren 370 03-10-2017 12:01 AM

When somebody ask me what's my height I always answer:

Iam 5 feet and 7 inches below!

sp911 03-10-2017 05:30 AM

6' 2" and the z fits like a glove to me.

Same here. No problem for me either. I do like to sit on a cushion, to elevate my eye level slightly, or I find the exterior mirror blocks oncoming traffic sometimes.

JARblue 03-10-2017 08:23 AM

You may just have to learn to modulate the clutch with a mostly extended leg. You don't need to push the clutch pedal past the point of engagement/disengagement. In fact, your clutch system is probably better off with you not pushing the clutch pedal all the way to the floor as that just stresses the master cylinder seals prompting premature failure.

mishuko 03-10-2017 09:14 AM

I'm like 5"5.... :ughdance: I'm pretty sure I'm closer to the airbags than most of you here. Pro tip

Don't crash and you'll be good!

If you do... git gud kid. Jk I know sometimes shet happens

Other way around. You can adjust pedal height not engagement point.

For the actual adjustment you're increasing the "bite" window so to say.

There you go.... if you just need the clutch pedal to sit a little higher, then maybe all you need is an RJM pedal. Plus, everyone that has one thinks it's the greatest thing the universe.

Except me. Think my expectations were on account of that though

shirokenkami 03-10-2017 01:14 PM

My problem is that I need a telescopic capable steering wheel, i.e. too tall. That or I need my arms to grow about another 4 inches...

Sounds like you have my specs as well. I have electric seats and when I get out, I push the seat all the way back before I get out. When I get back in, I extend my leg while pushing in the clutch and then push the seat forward. When the clutch pedal is fully depressed, I know I have hit my spot.

I tilt the seat back as well to get into the best position for me too...

AestheticCM1 03-10-2017 01:38 PM

I'm 5' 7'', and I've never had a problem with the seating position. It might be helpful to fiddle with the seat's tilt adjustment.

Thyristor 03-10-2017 02:23 PM

it sounds like you might be pushing the clutch to the floor which you shouldn't have to do. as other have said you barely have to push the clutch in for the clutch to disengage. if i had to push the clutch the whole way in id have to move the seat the whole way up also and im 5' 10":icon17:

yaoxiao4 03-10-2017 04:07 PM

thanks for the help guys, I think I'm just gonna sit further back and not push the clutch to the floor due to the high engagement point

Not exactly on topic, but this thread's reminded me of a photo I took of Steve, sometime around 2005, at one of our first meets, when our UK 350Z club was in it's infancy...

Poor guy couldn't do track days because if he wore a crash helmet he didn't fit in the car.

cooltoy 03-10-2017 05:41 PM

Plus he has no head to put a helmet on to.

Everyone else in that pic is 5' or less right? :rofl2:

Good god how tall is he. Probably oh should have got the roadster instead!

Steve was legendarily tall (an ex-fireman) - and the bit about not fitting in the car if he was wearing a crash helmet is true, but I must admit I photoshopped the pic some years ago. Everyone else is normal size.

Surgery appears to be an option for the OP :eekdance:

Metal pins or screws are placed through the skin and into the bone. Pins are placed above and below the cut in the bone. Stitches are used to close the wound.
A metal device is attached to the pins in the bone. It will be used later to very slowly (over months) pull the cut bone apart. This creates a space between the ends of the cut bone that will fill in with new bone.
When the leg has reached the desired length and has healed, another surgery is done to remove the pins.

There are less drastic solutions...

I'm 5' 6" with a 27 inch inseam....no problems driving my Z. I like to recline a bit too.
