370Z Quality
I just got a new Z, and I've read some of the threads on oil consumption, ECU whine, etc. There's always going to be some significant problems and unhappy customers...and many will post online.
I can tell you, my impression is that the 370Z is a fabulously high qaulity and well finished car. In my opinion the ride quality is seriously impressive given the sporting ability...maybe it seems rough if you're used to a 150k Ferrari...I wouldn't know. The interior road noise is very high, but could be improved with different tires or Dynomat. It's not a problem for me, a minor annoyance considering the car I just got out of.... I just got out of a 9 year old Camaro SS, bought used with 15k miles, now with 150k miles on it, and the previous owner was a 17 year old who did burn outs in the dealer parking lot when the car was brand new. It used oil pretty good, a quart every 1500 miles, but the performance never suffered. Way faster than the Z, and more kick in the pants. Who cares if you put $6 of oil in every couple months. The car was a stupendous performer (on smooth roads) with modified suspension, but the squeaks and rattles just about drove me mad, and took me weeks to track them all down and fix on the interior. My wife called it a "rattle can". I took very good care of the thing, but went through a clutch, water pump, two sets of shocks, two differentials, a speaker, and more I can't remember. The whole car vibrated, and had a very "race car" just bolted up and barely held together unrefined feel to it. I loved it, but now I'm spoiled by the luxury ride of the Z....and I'll stick with that thank you. Oh yeah, and the rear hatch NEVER opened without being pulled on a couple times. Yet I was still a very happy owner all these years, and enjoyed the car imensley. So, the Z cost 2X as much as the Camaro, but has probably 5X fewer issues or concerns....if any at all.....not bad at all. Last edited by BrianMSmith; 12-07-2009 at 06:49 PM. |

The Z won the award for JD Power Best Initial Quality, so we have a well-built car (initially anyway).
Interesting you say the 2000 Camaro SS pulled harder and was faster than our Z. Looking at the specs, they list a 0-60 time of 5.3s, 1/4 mile of 13.7. That's on par or slower than the Z. Another site listed a 2000 Z28 running a 1/4 mile in 12.9 @ 110mph. Maybe the V8 roar made it feel faster? Glad you're loving your new Z. I've had mine 9 months and I'm still treating it like it's brand new .

Funny you just got out of a camaro SS, that was the other car i was looking at before i bought the Z. The backseat would have been nice, and it would have been really cool to say i drove a car with the same engine as the corvette, but i just fell in love with the Z.
2 things ultimately drove me to the z instead of the SS...1) i've always been more of an import kind of guy, i want to like American Cars and support our american dealerships, i really do, but i just gravitate towards imports more. And at this point in my life, i dont need a back seat 2) i bought my nismo 370 for almost 3k under MSRP. The chevy dealerships i looked at were selling the camaro SS for 3-5k OVER sticker. That was the tipping point in favor or the Z for me. The nismo Z ended up being cheaper than a camaro SS, and up until that point i thought the one thing keeping the SS in it for me was price. The one night i've driven the car so far it feels very well put together. My old car (06 civic si) had a ton of rattles...somehow i dont think this will have quite as many. Closing the doors feels solid, cornering feels solid...everything feels very tight and i hope it stays that way. |

We've got to separate reliability, in general, from the "little nuisances" that aggravate you, but won't leave you stranded. Case in point: The 370's engine, cooling system, electrical system, transmission--especially the AT--, body integrity, etc., are great. But, there are the little annoyances, such as the hatch door issue, the power windows acting up, the paint quality not up to par, etc. You know, things that won't leave you marooned at 1:00 AM in the middle of the road. In my opinion, the Z fluctuates between B+ and A-.

Camaro vs 350Z
I'm surprised to hear that the Camaro feels faster than the 370.
My current car is a base 2006 350Z 6MT, and previously drove a 1997 Camaro Z28 6 speed (however not an SS). While without question my Camaro had much more low end torque, the 350 has much better top end, and subjectively at least, I have always felt that acceleration was about the same overall. |

Americans big block V8 always got huge torque,but low revs,& not so good top end,except the supercharged ones....These engine also used up alot of fuel.not very earth friendly.
