2018: Backup cameras are required. What does this mean for non-tech Z's?

In case you haven't heard, all new cars will require a backup camera by May 2018.

New Backup Camera Rule: Cameras Will Be Mandatory by 2018 - Autotrader

Assuming that Nissan will continue to manufacture the 370z for the 2018 model year, what do you think this will mean for trims that do not have the tech package? Do you think the navigation screens will now be standard (RIP cubby), or will Nissan go the cheaper route and just install rearview cameras with a small screen?

Or do you think 2017 will be the end of the 370z line? (After all, requiring backup cameras will increase the price of the vehicle, which won't exactly drive already declining sales...)

They have a backup camera already that is in the rearview mirror. That is what you will see.

Cam system adds less than $150 to price of new cars, according to the article you linked to. I doubt that will have much effect on a $30000+ car's sales.

I would assume it would be about the same as the number of car models/platforms that died due to those newfangled seat belts being mandatory in the 1960's.

As mentioned, Nissan already has a rear view mirror you can get with the embedded screen for a rear camera. Zero impact.

Yeap, I need one also. My neck is not working like it use to.

Yep, OEM rear view mirror camera was my first mod. Must have with this car!

Yeah these are super cheap to add in. A lot less than turn signals.

Our DD Honda Civic Si has a super nice camera in the bottom of the passenger rear view mirror, displays on the screen. During right turn signal or can be shown per demand. Awesome thing to have. All cars ought to have these. And this on a car I got for $22,000 off the showroom floor.

That's cool that you like it and all - to each their own. The Honda sales guy was really trying to sell me on this feature when we went to test drive new cars. Nothing but a gimmick IMO. Thank you, but I'll continue to pay attention to my surroundings constantly and not rely on a camera or other technology to tell me when there's a car in the lane next to me :shakes head:

Ah! I had no idea there was already an OEM rear view mirror camera for the Z. That's good to know! Looks like these cars should be good for yet another year if they do make those standard. :tiphat:

The Chassis is almost 10 years old, in the sports car world that's old.
