Nissan Could Face The Biggest Risk If Trump Makes Good On His Mexico Threats
This is not a thread of political opinion. PLEASE REFRAIN FROM SUCH. It's against forum rules. I'm only guessing here but... But if these tariff proposals succeed. It would affect how Nissan is able to sell cars. If this happens... If a Z is in the works for production? Negative relations with Japan May lead to a lack of importation of enthusiast vehicles. Tarrifs May make our cars too expensive making them unattainable in our market? This fvckin sucks.

You'll have to come to Canada to buy yours.
PS Z's are built in Japan.

Despite Mr. Trump's election, our political class has a "don't rock the boat" attitude. They figure they have a pretty sweet setup going, and don't want to chance messing it up.
Rhetoric to the contrary, I don't see a whole lotta change coming our way. Now, Nissan, on the other hand.... My guess, and that's all it is is a guess, is that they will stop production on the 370 in the next year or 2, and put the Z badge on the shelf for a while. Look at it. Base models are selling for about 3k off MSRP, Sports are around 4k and Nismo's and roadsters for 5 to 6k off. Volume is mediocre at best. Nissan's focus seems to be family cars (OK. All mfrs have to. It's their bread and butter.) with the GT-R being their flag-waving marque. We get what little bit of attention they have left. Kind of like middle child syndrome, lol. We don't have any direct competition in the US. Or, direct comparison, anyway. 6-cyl mustangs and Camaros. Cars nobody talks about. Toyota's 86 is 200 horses and Honda's civic is about the same. Genesis coupe is a competitor, but it's marque is going thru a transition. It pretty much boils down to...Nissan don't need us no more. I thought all 370Zs were built in Japan. When did they start making them in Mexico?

I plan to keep my Z for about three more years and then I'll see what's next. I'm in my mid 50's so my appetite for sporty transportation may change by then. I can't imagine what the options will be for the now generation in the next several decades.

I am calm. It doesn't matter that the Z is made in Japan. You're not looking at the whole picture. If Nissan can't import the sentra and versa without charging us an extra 31% import tariff. It will most likely kill off the sentra and versa sales in this country. The sentra is trades back and forth between altimas as their best selling brand in this country. Being that Trump will probably increase ALL import tax. We will probably see a hike of at least 4 to 10%. You're looking at an increase $1,200-3000. The Z barely sells know cuz most people think its $3,000 to expensive. If a new Z is designed with 400hp and new tech. We may be looking at $40K start for a 400hp base Z. A tax hike may make it up to $44,000 putting Nissan back in the overpriced predicament. If the top tier car is $50K. Mr Trumps plan makes the top line Z $55K. People will rather buy the Z51 C7 cuz all they will see is 55 more HP. It would make the Z not worth buying to most people. The Z would need 500hp to compete. N Nissan won't give us 55K and 500hp. They didn't even put 215 hp in the Sentra Nismo. All I'm saying is. These types of policies can grossly affect the import market. Now imagine they give us the overpriced Z anyway? Do you know what would happen to mod prices cuz of this. Volume drops mod prices. The less a car sells, the more expensive the mods and the less people are willing to design and engineer aftermarket parts. Carlos Ghosn promised us a new Z. It's coming. Now if it gets imported to this country is something else.

Amen, xhil. I ain't tryin' to relive anything. I never had anything worth reliving until after I turned 40. I'm 53 now, and this is probably the car I'm gonna keep. I don't like Corvettes (aesthetically. Don't y'all get your panties in a twist) and everyone has a Mustang. This one's special and unique enough.
