Rev match scare
I was on my way to work yesterday afternoon ,having a little fun in the Z. Anyway I was doing around 75 and had to slow down for traffic getting on the highway,so I wanted to drop her in 4th to get back up to speed ,I accidentally put it in the 2nd gear hole and it scared the hell out of me so I immediately took it out and put it in 4th. I am not sure but I think it revved to 6k or a little more. I didn't like it at all and it was bugging me all night thinking I hurt something. Got in it this morning to go home all was normal ,but ?I hate the fact it happened.
Anyone else with the manual have this happen? This is what I hate about rev match! |
Don't worry, everything is fine.
I drive it at the track 5k+ rpm and downshifts to 7k+ to slow quickly without issues :) After I bought the car I was practicing shifting faster and got it wrong, at the end of 3rd gear shifted to second, luckly, I noticed instantly and disengaged the gear, it would go over 8k. More than 10k miles after what happened without issues. |
if it wasn't for the rev match warning, You might have released the clutch in second gear. Rev match might have spared you and the engine in this case.

:iagree: And Fixed post for you!:tiphat:

Just to be more exact, I downshift lets say from 6k in 4th to 7k in 3rd gear as example. Just making sure I am not misunderstood :). Going over that mechanically will blow the engine for sure.
And I agree with the guys, SRM is saving the engine when I get excited with g force LOL |

The rev limiter won't save your engine on a downshift either. The synchro rev will push RPM up until redline, but only if the clutch is still pushed in all the way. As soon as you release the clutch, there is nothing the car can do to stop the engine from over revving and destroying itself. |

It's amazing to me that some people continue to believe that the rev limiter will save them from the money shift.
|
If anything, the synchro rev acts as a warning bell, if you're not down shifting too fast. The worst that will happen is the engine will hit the rpm redline and bounce off it, but not surpass it. That in itself isn't anything to worry about. Only when you let go the clutch, will it go past. And then you spend mooooon-neeeeeh!!!

:stirthepot: Sorry in advance OP, but I gotta point this out. A few months ago, in another thread, you posted:
"you can shift at 6k all day long and it will never hurt the engine. that is not even touching red line." http://www.the370z.com/nissan-370z-g...ml#post3527514 And now you worry about one single no-load rev. I am confused :rofl2: |
