Damaging a Z..

And now you worry about one single no-load rev. I am confused

It's more your rods breaking or your valves staying open and burning out due to the engine spinning faster than it is intended to.

The rev limiter won't save your engine on a downshift either. The synchro rev will push RPM up until redline, but only if the clutch is still pushed in all the way. As soon as you release the clutch, there is nothing the car can do to stop the engine from over revving and destroying itself.
do urself a favor and re-read da post.

I drive my Z 60 miles a day, as a driver in heavy interstate traffic.

It gets to 7200-7500 at least twice a day. I generally drive the AT in M, and can shift it just before redline now by feel.

I did jump on it the other day thinking it was in M, but it was in D. I upshifted it manually by instinct, and it went to Neutral since the shifter was in the wrong slot. It went to 7700 immediately, since my foot was flat on the floor! This is not good - since there is no load on the crank. Hasn't seemed to have bothered it at all.

Keep good clean oil in it, at the correct fill level and temperature, and this engine will tolerate a lot of abuse.

I was around 7k RPM on 4th gear and was about to shoot it to 5th but I accidently shot it to 3rd. Engine screamed and I felt terrible. But nothing happened afterward. VQs are pretty solid engine.

I neutral rev all the time. I hit redline in first and 2nd more frequently than not. I sit at 4k rpm when I'm near a prius.

I slow down and downshift entering a tunnel and wot redline through it.

Aslong as your temps are good it's fine.
Hmm

It's quite safe to blip the throttle to that point.
