Unresponsive clutch pedal

Hi guys,

I had a question for the group: I am trying to diagnose an issue where my clutch pedal resists coming back up after being pressed it. Sometimes it will rise about halfway and stick there, sometimes it will be virtually pinned to the floor with only an inch or so to engage/disengage.

I have had this issue three times in the past, with the following resolutions:

1) slave cylinder (replaced with OEM)
2) slave cylinder (replaced with Zspeed)
3) decomposed clutch fluid (replaced through TSB)

But in all three cases, the issue arose, quickly deteriorated and caused an inability to disengage the clutch (rendering the car inoperable) within a few minutes (a few days in the case of the fluid)

But in this case, it started cropping up about 8 months ago but will come and go. Sometimes I get into the car and the pedal is already at the floor (despite being fine the night before), sometimes it occurs through driving. Sometimes it gets worse within a few seconds and then better after a while (a few minutes to an hour or so later), with or without turning off the car. Occasionally, it lasts for several days and the depth that the clutch pedal is stuck seems to vary randomly. I can always use the clutch, although the engagement point can vary wildly.

It doesn't seem to occur any more or less frequently that when it started near the beginning of the year. Any ideas?

Thank you!

If it isn't your slave cylinder then it is the master cylinder going bad on you. Did you change the master out the two times you replaced the slave? Zspeed recommends replacing both the master cylinder and the slave at the same time.

Yes, since I had to drop the tranny I replaced both the slave and master on both occasions, but my mechanic confirmed that it was the slave that went out both times.

In that case, you and your mechanic need to call Joe@Zspeed and work with him to diagnose this issue. From what I've seen on these forums, people who still had problems after putting in a new Zspeed slave and oem master either did not install it properly, they over torqued the bleeder valve damaging it, or did not completely bleed all the air out of the system. Joe is a class act and stands behind his products and customers but you need to reach out to him directly. Here's a few threads with similar issues. Good luck and keep us posted.

No problems. Seriously though, call Joe first thing in the morning. He's an active vendor on this board. Nissan 370Z Forum - View Profile: Joe@ZSpeed
