1. I liked the Miata. But I didn't love it. I feel the 370, especially in Nismo form, comes in a "let's have fun" configuration right out of the box. A stock Miata would be terrible in comparison. I know the new interior is an improvement over the one I had, but even after looking at the current Miata, I wouldn't go back. 2. My Miata was supercharged and had a ton of upgrades done on it, from front to back. Supercharger, intake, full exhaust including headers, forged wheels, brake upgrades, a ton of chassis bracing, pricey coilovers, you name it... and after all of that, the car felt like a noisier version of the 370. I bought the car modded off a trusted coworker of mine in the condition it was and I can't imagine a stock Miata being very fun... it's slow as balls and without the 18k in upgrades, would've been crap in comparison to a 370. 3. I'm a tall guy. 6'7". I did fit in the Miata I had, but just barely. The new one is a tad bit smaller... overall the 370 is just a bit more comfortable over all. 4. The Miata, in stock form, seems to be geared to middle aged men who want to have a bit of fun still, but not TOO much fun. Yeah, if you're 45-50 years old, you'll love it. But don't expect anything fantastic about it, in any department. 5. I thought I would miss the convertible aspect. My car was a 2009 Miata GT with the power retractable hard top... with the top on, visibility was horrendous. Everything was always noisy, especially on the highway... the wind noise is brutal. The hard top is no better at insulating than the rag top. It sucked driving with the top down at times, because traffic was moving slow and it was HOT out... not exactly pleasant... I honestly don't miss having a convertible at all. It was ok while I had it... but I 10/10 prefer the Nismo in every way imaginable. I drive with the windows fully down quite often in the Z, and I love it much more than in the Miata. 6. The engine/exhaust sound did nothing for me. It sounded like a raging lawnmower... I'll have a hard time going back to a 4 cyl sound over a 6 cyl sound. No thanks. After awhile, I had a bit of buyers remorse with the Miata. Not huge, because I knew I could sell the car for pretty much what I paid for it, but still.. it wasn't that great. I haven't had a single feeling of remorse with the Z. Love it, through and through!! Last edited by Nithmo; 11-03-2016 at 01:04 PM. |

I'm pretty sure they got an upgrade. The Z doors can't hold a candle to them now

Gentlemen,
I went the other way. I've always been a huge Z fan and have owned a 1970 240Z, a 1984 300ZX NA, and recently sold my 1990 300Z NA after 19 years of ownership in September of this year. I then started searching for a replacement, and yes, I looked hard at the 2016 MX5 Miata. Checked it out online, searched all of its forums to find any common issues with it, and finally stopped into a local dealership to test drive it. I'd even downloaded the FSM and all TSB's in my research. I thought I'd found a darn good prospect for my next sports toy. Great fuel economy, 5.5 seconds to 60 mph with the right driver, taught handling, great looks, and a simple operating soft top. That test drive did the car in .... I didn't fit! At 6'2", 220 lbs, I could drive the car, but there was no room! A drive across town would be fine, but a 5 hour drive would cripple me. And on the passenger side my knees touched the dash! There just wasn't any room to get absolutely comfortable. Down the street I go and test drive a 2016 370Z base coupe. Slightly faster than the MX5 by .4 seconds, definitely thirstier, and a whole lot roomier. Didn't buy that one, but a week later I latched onto a 2016 Roadster Touring Sport. For me, that was the best option, over the Miata (no room), the Z4 and the Boxster (too much snob appeal with these two). Gene |

Compared to a Z though, it's not that exciting. I'd say an s2000 is a much more enjoyable car than a Miata. Stiffer chassis, more power, better handling, with only an air intake has one of the most intoxicating engine sounds, high revving, fantastic interior and they're actually desirable. Their value is starting to rocket. Last edited by Nithmo; 11-03-2016 at 11:35 PM. |

But seriously, I had a first gen Miata about 10 years ago and I just could not shake the feeling of being in a cartoonish chick car. I looked like a circus bear in a toy car and I'm a skinny dude. Of course Mazda have now gone to great lengths to make the car more masculine looking but its still a "cute" car according to my wife and I don't drive cute cars. The latest gen MX-5 is a great handling/nimble sports car but no way in hell does it even begin to compare to a Z......unless you drop in a LS3 crate engine (see latest Smoking Tire episode on Youtube).
