Changed MT fluid to Redline

Changed to Redline MT-90 (GL4, 75w90). Like others have noticed, there is a huge improvement in shifting afterwards.

davidyan 11-28-2009 08:44 PM

Sorry- wrong section, I know. I can't figure out how to move it.

m4a1mustang 11-28-2009 09:42 PM

Can you be more descriptive? I've been thinking about doing this.

I put MT-90 in my lotus (notorious for horrible shifting) and it literally felt like I had a different car. the shifting was suddenly smooth as could be. I was blown away by the improvement.

I love Redline gearbox oil, the best I've ever experienced.

m4a1mustang 11-28-2009 11:55 PM

I am going to have to order some and take care of it at my next oil change.

Matt 11-29-2009 12:09 AM

Is there any need to wait x miles before changing the MT fluid like the engine oil? How often does the stock MT fluid need to be replaced vs a synthetic?

How much would a shop usually charge for flushing/refilling if I provide the fluid?

SmoothZ 11-29-2009 10:32 AM

+1 on the Redline fluid. I did the tranny and rear diff fluid swap at my 30k mile service. The car definitely shifts smoother.

kenchan 11-29-2009 11:28 AM

im thinking about doing this on my G. it's a notchy gearbox from the getgo. the Z, not so much...to me it's pretty smooth. not toggle switch smooth like my honda's gearbox but smooth enough.

CBRich 11-29-2009 11:53 AM

I may also have to try this. As noted the 370 has decent shifting but coming from a Honda it just doesn't have that smooth snick action.

spearfish25 11-29-2009 06:30 PM

I did two DIYs in the DIY section on tranny and rear diff oil changes. I put the appropriate Redline products in each. I did the rear diff first but didn't notice any difference really (not sure I would really notice anything). The rear diff oil was NASTY, so that alone made the change worth it. After I changed the tranny oil (which looked pristine), the car shifts much much smoother. With a cold start, it shifted like a warm transmission instead of the clunky, stiff shifts you normally get before the car warms up. Definitely worth changing out both oils. I did it at 3k miles. Changed the motor oil to Redline at 5k.

Will probably do this at my next oil change, which will be around 12,000 miles (currently at 10,000).

Sure, here are the main differences upon the change to Redline MT-90 in the 6MT gearbox that I have noticed so far:

- easier gear engaging when cold, esp. 2nd gear
- smoother downshifts
- gearbox whine seems to be slightly quieter than before (not significant- could be caused by other factors).

Haven't tested under high RPM shifting yet, but in my other car, it seems to engage better with the Redline fluid.

Im in for a Group Buy...

theDreamer 12-02-2009 08:55 AM

Group buy for oil, MT fluid, all of the above?

Liquid_G 12-02-2009 09:58 AM

I'd be in for the GB

ChrisSlicks 12-02-2009 11:48 AM

I'm in for GB. I need diff, trans and engine oil.

teejnut 12-02-2009 01:16 PM

I'm interesting in a GB!

JB1 12-02-2009 01:20 PM

Interested in the GB! (motor/trans/diff)

YamahaR6 12-02-2009 01:55 PM

I got a question:

I read some where that Redline MT90 might not be good for the transmission synros. The gear box might be smooth but oil doesn't protect the synros as good as original trans oil. (I could be wrong).

My story:

I had a VW vr6 back then and I changed the oil to MT90 at around 90K km and when the car was at 140K km the transmission failed (grinny, tran oil leaking...). Not sure if it was the oil but VW tranny should last more than 140K.

Anyone?

puckman77 12-02-2009 02:06 PM

Not sure about the manual tranny because I have the AT, but the owner's manual hints that the diff fluid must be the Nissan stuff specified or risk voiding the warranty on the rear diff. Anyone read this like I do?

YamahaR6 12-02-2009 02:09 PM

I believe people are feeling better shifting is because Redline oils are thinner than the stock oil. Stock oil needs more time to warm-up than Redline.

But the question is, does Redline oil protects just as well as the stock oil or better??

Blown32 12-02-2009 03:07 PM

I'am using 50% virgin olive oil and 50% peanut oil and what a difference!Soooooo much smoother!

spearfish25 12-02-2009 03:16 PM

Here we go again with Nissan oil being mysteriously superior to other products. The Redline oils that we're using to replace the OEM oil have the same viscocity ratings as the stock crap. Fluids with the same viscocity have the same resistance to flow/shear aka 'thickness'.

Finally, how is the 18 year old Nissan technician going to know that the black sludge coming from my rear diff is Redline or Nissan OEM oil? No way will they be able to tell the difference.

Blown32 12-02-2009 03:22 PM

We can beat this to death the same as the engine oil!As long as you are happy useing a good quality oil in the diff, engine,or trans you will be fine.Enjoy the car and move on.

ssqpolo 12-02-2009 04:29 PM

i would probably be interested in a group buy. could u pm me an approximate price for all of the oils

alvinmathew88 12-02-2009 05:21 PM

Interested as well, PM me! Just the motor oil though..

JakeZ34 12-02-2009 06:57 PM

interested in group buy, motor, tran, and diff oil all at once!

Z1Performance 12-02-2009 06:58 PM

we don't do the whole pm for price thing guys, we simply post it

we'll work out some details tomorrow and post in our vendor classified section for those interested

It would be nice to get it quicker, and maybe even get a little bit of a discount. :):hello:

It should be similar viscosity. The manual recommends a 75W-85. The MT-90 is a 75-90 which is actually a bit thicker but not by much at all. Both the Nissan and Redline MT-90 manual trans fluid are GL-4.

jpit 12-02-2009 11:46 PM

Some people (including me) mix 2 qts of MTL and 2 qts MT-90 to get the right viscosity.
Nissan actually does say that you can use 75W-85 or 75W-90 in the manual transmission
(I think the 350Z used only 75W-85).

jmlenz 12-02-2009 11:51 PM

Im in for Redline MT oil. Shifting into 2nd is always notchy when cold and this trans in general could shift a bit smoother...sounds like this fluid might do the trick.

sylenze 12-03-2009 12:01 AM

+1 on Group buy for redline oil 5w30!!

WShade 12-03-2009 10:52 AM

I am in as well. Currently I get my Red Line from Jegs at $9.99 qt with free 2 day shipping. They charge a $9.99 handling charge per order but that is a lot cheaper than the shipping would be so it works out. Make me a better deal

Z1Performance 12-03-2009 07:04 PM

if you guys can let me know how much of each people want, that will make this alot easier - we have alot of this stuff available, and there are alot of different products. This way I dont waste alot of time working out GB pricing on things no one is going to buy :)

JakeZ34 12-03-2009 07:38 PM

if the group buy is going on then I would take
atleast 6 quart of the engine oil 5w30
3 quart of the transmission and 3 quart of the rear diff (or whatever the recommended amount is)

ChrisSlicks 12-03-2009 08:00 PM

3 gallons of 0W-40 Motor Oil (2 oil changes worth)
4 quarts (or 1 gallon) of 75W90 GL-5 Gear oil (2 changes worth for the diff)
3 quarts of MT-90 75W90 GL-4 Gear Oil (1 change worth for the trans)
