Sorry, but if you don't have the common sense to know when to shift gears or what gear to be in in a certain situation, then you shouldn't be driving a stick, and if you have an Auto, leave the damn thing in automatic mode. Obviously, the car is smarter than you.

I swear, it's like a bunch of 7 year old kids on here posting these silly questions.

I'll put it to you simple...

If you want max efficiency, accelerate slow, shift low without bogging the engine and keep the rpms as low as possible, in the highest gear possible, no matter what speed you're going.

If you want max performance, ring that bi*ch out to redline in every gear.

ok.

No sh!t it's an Auto. I knew that from the OP's post. Unlike some people, I actually read the entire posts and comprehend them. I was saying it doesn't matter if it's a stick or auto, the same rules apply either way. And it's obvious the OP is using the paddles.

Aggressive? Maybe.
Tampons? Not hardly.
Tired of some of the juvenile questions? Definitely.

I beg to differ

Not necessarily saying your question was dumb; there are plenty of other threads out there that would beat this thread hands down. But I will agree with several other posters that if you have to ask, you shouldn't be using manual mode

There are too many people around here that are just waiting to jump on someone. In this case if this was the OPs first car with a manual mode/ paddles there could be questions. I know it was my first with the paddles & didn't just jump in & go. To say if you don't know how to use the paddles, don't use manual mode How are you suppose to learn if you don't ASK? Whether it sounds a little dumb or not. If you don't like this kind of threads don't read them & waist your time.

Let's not pretend this information isn't already on the internet, and shift points (recommended and minimum) are listed in the owner's manual. If you understand the basics of driving a stick and proper shift points, you know how to use the paddles. Common sense goes a long way.

I think the OP asked if they could drive in 4th gear from ~37mph until 7th gear. Umm... sure. You can drive in 4th gear until red line which is going to be like 120 mph or something far beyond where you would normally shift into 7th for cruising. I can shift directly from 1st to 6th at 35 mph in my MT Z, but 2nd-5th are there for a reason. That being said, sitting up around 4K RPMs while cruising for a bit is no problem - I understand wanting to be in the power band when that passing opportunity arises. Just keep an eye on temps and upshift when you no longer need the power. Personally, I feel the paddles are perfect for cruising in 7th and then downshifting into 4th or whatever when you need the power - it's not like the 7AT is a horribly slow shifting trans.

But if you're learning for the first time and not sure that you're doing it right, maybe wait until you have someone teach you how to properly use the paddles. A knowledgeable person in the passenger seat is going to provide way more benefit than discussing the topic on the internet.

If someone wants to learn how to shift with the paddles, all they have to do is leave the car in Auto, drive the car several different ways and pay attention to where the car is shifting, OR...

Like JARblue said, use some common sense.

Hell, 99% of the time, putting around town, I'm already in 6th gear by the time I reach 35 mph. Other times I'm doing 35 mph in 1st gear! But that's neither here nor there.
