How OCD are you with your Z?

Hey guys, I was talking to some people the other day about some of my habits and tendencies with my car and they all said that I'm out of my mind, lol. I keep my car meticulously clean and wash it once or twice a week. I keep towels on both of my seats to protect them from scratches and the like. I recently replaced my kick plate because it had a tiny scratch on it (even though that's what it is for). And I've been obsessing lately about a 3 inch scrape towards the bottom of my car that no one else can even see outside myself.

Please tell me I haven't lost my mind, I know many of share the same affliction right? lol

Yup, and Nope....Life's too short. Enjoy the car.

kannibul 11-24-2009 02:44 PM

I tend to not drive my Z much, but I also tend to not car for it like some people on here.

I'm probably just as meticulous as anyone else, but, I'm also pretty lazy and have other priorities. The end result is that I don't drive it much, so I don't have to clean it much.

Kind of wierd, I guess. I'll get over it slowly, and enjoy the car more and more as it happens. As is, I'm enjoying the crap out of it. Even more when I drive it. What I don't enjoy is finding another chip in the paint, etchings from bird and bug, and scratches no matter how faint. Like I said, as time goes on, they won't stand out as much, as the collection of blemishes will inevitably increase, and as such, I'll be less concerned over them, and will just be left with the enjoyment of owning this car.

gotta open my garage every hour just to make sure its not a dream and its physically there. LOL j/k now that would be OCD max

I sorta did that the first few days i had the car haha

azn370z 11-24-2009 03:28 PM

My big thing is no one touches my car. So I do my oil changes and mod installs myself. I never lean or rest my hand on the paint. I'm thinking of wrapping my torque bar in foam when I install my coilovers.

Boostcrazy 11-24-2009 04:03 PM

I try and wash it once a week. clean interior once every 2 weeks. But sometimes stuff comes up and dont have time to clean the Z so it just gets a little dirty, oh well. I'm more OCD on the car's mechanical health than the outside.

blinkme323 11-24-2009 04:08 PM

I'm kind of right with you man. I'm always going over my car with a fine-toothed comb seeing if there are any imperfections. I recently scraped my side-skirt and even though it's small and I'm the only one who knows about it, it's driving me crazy.

One thing I have learned though, is that no matter how careful you are, scratches, dings, scrapes will always happen, it's just the way it is.

Yes, you have lost your mind!:icon18: I think it's time to park the Z in a nice dust-free heated garage for the rest of your life. Then, you need to find someone who has a straight-jacket for you to try on.

In reality, you should probably not obsess so much about your new car. But, if that's your demeaner..... park it!

didymus 11-24-2009 04:34 PM

You keep towels over your seats? WTF?

Modshack 11-24-2009 04:37 PM

I have a forum acquaintance who is an over the top OCD guy. He's spent more than $10K replacing every interior and wear part on his Audi TT in the past 2 years, some parts multiple times. Current value of the car? Maybe $10K if he's lucky. He is one sick dood..No telling what his parents did to him when he was a kid. Don't be him..

spearfish25 11-24-2009 04:46 PM

Just scuffed my clear coat so now I'm shopping for a Porter Cable polisher...

ctzn 11-24-2009 05:12 PM

I keep a can of compressed air in my glove box to take care of dust between the buttons/shift knob/dash etc... Nothing wrong with cleanliness.

kenchan 11-24-2009 06:32 PM

my Z sits in the garage during the week, only driven on dry days, QD'ed after drives, will be washed once or twice a year before a full detail.

i like driving clean cars yet i dont like washing them. i just drive my dd to work and do all the errands.

Welcome to the club. Most everyone that knows me appreciates that I keep the Z clean. I also keep the other cars clean, so it's no big deal. However, the Z gets special attention which does cause some funny accusations from my friends and relatives.

Guys, it's just a car. If I were you I'd start thinking about the blessings of our families and not worrying so much about a chunk of iron.

However I do pet mine from time to time....:icon17:

I am so OCD that i am thinking after winter time driving in the rain, that i will get the car professionally buffed then see if i can get another cleacoat added ontop(not sure if its possible) and maybe have the bottom clean and protected so it doesnt rust.

smashbar 11-25-2009 06:48 AM

I'm extremely OCD as well.. I've had the car for 3 weeks and drove it only twice on perfect weather days (only because I HAD to... I didn't take posession of my winter-beater till 3 days after I bought the Z). Then I washed it and stuck it in the garage till last Saturday when I had the whole front-end clear-bra'd. It will never come out in the rain or snow.. and, sadly, once it snows for the first time and salt/sand get thrown on the roads, it won't come back out till the spring when the roads get swept. I've got about 80 miles on the car (literally)... and it probably won't get past 100 till next spring (!!!). This is literally my first brand new car (and my dream car, at that), and I can only do this because I recently got a cheap winter junk car. Yeah, i'm a little OCD! :icon14:

LOL. No... I know. I'll be driving it for sure. Just not in any crap weather. And for the record it's a touring model, auto w/rear spoiler and I got it new for a little over 32k. Now is definitely the time to take advantage of those end-of-the-year deals!

:iagree: I do try to keep a good coat of carnauba wax on it (3-4 x per year, claying the paint & applying wax). Use touchless auto washes a few times a month.

Mostly tho, I just drive it. Had too many cars to get hung up on one. It is a machine, for pleasure (h'mmm my wife has one too, but it is shaped differently).:roflpuke2:

Just enjoy it!

Yes, it's kind of like a towel with a hole in the top for the head rest. It does a good job of protecting the seat. It's more for my peace of mind, if I found a tear or pull in the cloth I'd honestly consider replacing the whole seat.

You are not alone. Actually, its more like thank God i'm not alone. Bought my Z in April. The next day bought a 95 millenia for the winter. Changed the oil on the Z at 600 miles then at every 1500 miles after that. I'm the only one that washes it and applies wax to it. As far as OCD i press the lock button on the key fob at least 6 or 7 times before i finally walk away. :excited: It's a beautiful car but don't forget to drive the hell out of it cuz thats where the real enjoyment is. :driving: Co-workers and friends bust my balls all the time but i don't care cuz im faster!:happydance:

Jason 11-26-2009 05:41 AM

Man, I thought I was crazy... I just wash my car once a week and wax every few months. I don't let anyone lean on my car and I park strategically. I have a gf, work, school and a very active social life. I can't imagine keeping the car as clean with my own business, house or kids.

A girlfriend of mine had her feet all over the dash and headliner once and I could care less... Probably scratched a few things but it's all good.

I was with you until you got to this part. I love my GF, but she puts her foot on my dash and my foot's going....well...nvm. :bowrofl:

Seriously though, I'd hope she wouldn't do that to my car whether it's an 2009 Z or a 1990 Mirage.

Jason 11-26-2009 05:54 AM

It was worth it. Lol

Well, as bad as I am about my RSX, if I ever get a Z, I can't see being any different.

Made a "roll-around" for washing the car and then, put together a little "detailing station" in the garage:

KillerBee370 11-26-2009 10:11 AM

No garage queen here. I ran into a guy at the gas station once filling up his Ferrari 360 Stradale. I noticed that the front of his car was all pitted to hell and I asked him what happened. His reply was that he took the car to the track and drove it like it was intended to be driven. Ever since that day, I stopped obsessing over a big piece of metal and plastic with an engine and I enjoy the hell out of my car. I just got back from the track with a few new pits in the front and some tire marks that wouldn't quite clay bar out all the way and you know what..?

Good.
