4 Types of Car People

Thought I would share the 4 categories of car people I think there are. Maybe there are more but I think these are your absolute core without getting into subcategories:

1. The Collector: Hardly drives the cars he/she owns. Likes to keep it spotless to show people when they come over. Takes it to cars shows...the car has never seen 6th gear though

2. The Enthusiast: Always reading up on the latest about cars, rebuilds etc. Favorite show is Top Gear. Moderate to strong knowledge about whats going on in the car industry. Most likely has a nice car to feel part of the "car world" but doesn't have to own anything special to be a part of it, we are all family lol. Mostly uses it as a Daily Driver. Nothing too crazy.

3. The Driver: Arguably the "real" car person in my opinion. Usually maintains his or her car as a collector would, takes the same interest in the auto community as an enthusiast however uses their sports car or off road vehicle as it should be used. Track day, cruises to no where, rallies, road trips, car meets (blazin a trail for you off road people, or whatever you do :) )

4 The Mechanic: This is the guy or girl who has a project car or enjoys the work on cars more than anything else. Been working on the car for a LOOOOOOONNNNGGGG time. You have hear him or her say "just 1 more part or tune or pull or whatever lol" (much respect either way). This is the guy every car guy wish he knew. Your trusted mechanic friend :). You'll go on a canyon run or track day with him (if the car is finished) then after that event its a few more weeks in the garage re-tuning and making "adjustments".

Much respect to all 4 categories as everyone chooses their own path. Hopefully you guys can all relate. Maybe there is a category I am not thinking of. Pretty sure these cover it.

Thanks for reading! :tiphat:

I'm in between 2 and 3.

Firebase99 07-08-2016 01:33 PM

I think a 5 should be "the masses", they see a car as just an appliance, a mode to get from point a to point b and nothing more.

Chuck33079 07-08-2016 01:36 PM

Where's the categories for guys with a giant wing on a car that will never see the track, the one for the hellaflush/stance fuckwits, and the oblivious women who run to the dealer when it gets cold out and their TPMS light comes on?

ChaseZ 07-08-2016 01:42 PM

3 for sure

Perhaps a 3+ if you consider that I eat my meals in the garage when my kids aren't here :p

JC-Nismo 07-08-2016 03:08 PM

2 and 3 kinda describe me as neither of my enthusiast considered cars are daily driven and are both garage kept, but driven 1-2 times a week, at least the Nismo is, the SRT8 can sit for months sometimes without being driven, but I'm definitely not that guy who has a car that's five years old with 5000 miles on it!!! That shiit will never happen, cars are meant to be driven, I DON'T CARE WHAT IT IS!!! I would be the 1st person to have a Lambo with a 130k miles on it cause if I drop that kind of coin on a car, trust me, that mofo is getting the shiit driven out of it, LOL......

No, that's two categories. "The Masses" aren't necessarily idiots, they're just not into cars. "The Idiots" are into cars, but we all wish they weren't.

Don't forget the "Look at me peasants, I'm driving a Lamborghini and you're not" douches cruising in the most traffic dense cities seeking for attentions.

How can you tell the difference between those guys and the guys driving lambos who are thinking "Wow, what a great car I'm driving. Man, am I ever lucky"? Do the two types of Lambo drivers wear different hats? ...or maybe we just wish we were driving that lambo instead, hmmmmmm? ;)

JC-Nismo 07-08-2016 06:29 PM

I've met a lot of Lambo and other exotic car owners at car shows and to be honest, there all cool as hell, but I guess because there genuine car guys or they wouldn't be at the car show, they'd be at the yacht club.

Rusty 07-08-2016 09:30 PM

I'm a combo of 3 and 4. Like driving and wrenching.

Should be a subcategory for 4. Manic Mechanic. Always looking for the last oz of performance, and throws a ton of money at it. Which I used to be. :shakes head: :icon17:

Spooler 07-08-2016 10:39 PM

Was a 4, turned into a 3. Life changes you over time (Got married). I would like to be a 4 again but time is very limited. I have one project car that needs to be redone for the 3rd time and another that needs to be finished. I didn't even count the Nismo.

Never saw the point of this one, but sadly I've become that as far as my Ducati is concerned. I Put tons of miles on it initially but may have ridden it once this year.:shakes head:

I love Top Gear! Or did...

I wish I was this but I can't afford the time/$$ for track days. Yet. However, I abuse the crap out of my Jeep offroading, so it's not all bad.:ugh2:

Definitely me regarding my jeep (it's a mongrel built from 4 different Grand Cherokees, with a fully built engine) and the bike (full Ohlins, etc etc etc). Again, I'd do this with the nismo but I promised the wife I'd pay it off first. Smart woman.:shakes head:

I think I have multiple personalities.

What if you have multiple vehicles, drive some most of the time as a daily, get to point a-b., beat the hell out of them, etc.. but drive one less, on weekends or so, gives it a little bit more love and attention? What type are you?

I have a lot of 2-4 here. 1 doesn't fit because I believe cars should be driven. If you just want to look at them, why own them? Put them in a museum.

I have multiple vehicles, 2011 Infiniti FX35 (the heart of a Z (350Z) lol) and the 370Z. However the FX is kept just as meticulous as the Z however it gets dirtier quicker.

I think you land in the category for which you are willing to go the farthest. I would say i'm a hard 3 since USUALLY but not always, if you're a 3 you're naturally a 2
