Wow, me thinks this is a bad design. I should write Nissan USA and tell them that they need to factor this into their design. Driving without a key is like using a computer terminal at some random firm without having the proper authority, access, or permission to use it.

I suppose it wasn't considered in the design.

What if someone were driving their Nissan Z and they stopped at a 7-11 to throw away some trash in their trash can but the driver mistakenly threw away their car key as well and then they proceeded to continue driving without it. I hear these coded keys cost anywhere from $300 to $1,000 USD.

It's not that cold here in Memphis yet, but come January we'll start getting around 20 degrees...it will very, very rarely go lower than that.

LOL...There were stories every week on the Corvette forum about guys doing this. Their system works the same way. Tends to PO the wives when they have to drive 50+ miles to rescue the Hubby who left the FOB on the workbench...You usually only do this once....

Once again....you heard wrong.

But even at $75 (Corvette) or $125 (Mazda) or $275 (Nissan) that's the price you pay for stupidity..

+100

I hate the fact I even have to start my car when it's cold outside. It sounds so pissed off when starting from an ice cold sleep. While the engine was designed with those parameters in mind, it's still not very nice. Definitely not letting it sit there to warm up. I'm not that big of a puss...

The button on the handle works on my Altima while the engine is running so I'd imagine that it's similar for other recent Nissan/Infiniti cars.

The car will whine loudly (beeping, NO KEY LCD warning) if it loses contact with the key - it's hard to miss. I'd think it'd be a worse idea if the car shut itself off after losing communication with the keyfob for a while. My current car has shut itself off without warning in traffic at random. Not fun.

The solution here is to turn off your car when it's unattended. You wouldn't leave the keys in the ignition of a locked, non-Intellikey car, would you? All someone would have to do is smash the window and go.

I was quoted ~$200 for a new fob, mechanical key and programming at a dealership. It costs a lot more if you've forgotten/lost the security code number/tag that comes with your spare set of keys and all of your other keys.
