car stereo double din help !

ive been searching and i cant seem to find this anywhere, i wanted to purchase and install a touch screen double din in the compartment where the navigation screen is, but i have a base model so there is no navigation, just an empty spot where that thingy lifts up and you can put things inside for storage.

I don't know of anyone installing a full double din HU in the cubby location. But there are a dozen threads on installing a tablet there, including DIY threads and even a vendor selling a product for it :twocents:

Most of us run an ipad mini in the cubby via obd2 bluetooth, and put a double din headunit in where the radio is. Crutchfield has all the parts you need.

I know VABAM is going to install an Alpine ilx-007 in the cubby hole since it's not a full bodied double-din

thanks guys, ill look more into it, how come ppl install the tablet and a double din down below?

the only reason i wanted the double din in the cubby was bc i thought the shifter would block the view and get in the way, but when the sticks in drive its far away from it so i guess ill just put it in where the radio is

Because when you remove all the paneling, you will see that down below, where the radio is, is where all the mounting support is for a radio. In the upper area behind the cubby hole, there isn't any mounting support for DIN or Double DIN radios. Tablets are slim (not 6-12 inches deep like DIN radios) and are light so mounting them in lieu of the cubby is doable.

In cars that usually have large screen/large touchscreen head units, typically, the place where they put the screen isn't where the guts of the radio is. The screen area where you touch is usually just the slim screen and the place where you insert CDs and fiddle with all the buttons is where the core unit is. Presumably it is done this way due to space limitations behind the dash, safety, etc.

Yep that's the plan. When I do I plan on doing a write up with pics and so on. Hopefully I'll get started on that project by the end of June.

True a traditional double din won't fit that's why I'm getting the Alpine iLX-007. It's only 3" thick and it doesn't have a CD/DVD drive so it is much lighter. I took my factory Nav system apart while back and the Nav screen is almost 2" thick. Now when it comes to mounting supports, what do you think the factory NAV screen and controls (or the cubby) mount to? Granted a custom bracket will need to be made to utilize the NAV screen mounts but that is a non-issue, well at least for me.
