I'm not going to lie car owner stereo types tend to be pretty accurate and has deterred a couple of purchases for not wanting to be lumped into that group of individuals.

I felt the need to mod my mx5 so it didn't feel so "hairdresser" but, I came from a place where I appreciated English small light and quick cars. My first car at 15 was a 1968 triumph gt6 mk3. Such a fun go cart.. But wicked unreliable. The mx5 gives you that same driving experience without the reliability problems.. Yes it looks girly and jelly bean but it's hella fun to drive.. It had all the right mods including a supercharger.. It was the ultimate sleeper. Pulling away from a light and seeing a confused and embarrassed mustang driver in my rear view was priceless..

i guess one issue i have with some low esteem miata drivers are they think they are being looked down on and drive around like arseholes around faster cars like the Z and my STI.

its like i dont care if ur little car is fast or slow vs my cars or looks like a pos (older gen). u enjoy ur car da way u want to and LEAVE ME OUT OF IT.

i think the current mx5 looks pretty cool. it's definitely a fun looking car.

I actually considered getting a new MX5 or a BRZ. But when you are built like a division II fullback, those exceptionally engineered vehicles just don't fit.

Okay, I assume your hands move around with the steering wheel when you are turning, correct? So you are taking them off the wheel or loosening your grip to hit the paddles which don't move around the wheel. It's not as far, but it's still movement.

I would say that comparing percentages, automatic and manual drivers crash just as much. It's a poor argument.

Disagree. Common sense says you should never be shifting if you are at the limits of grip. Not sure if you have any real track time or not, but if so you would be painfully aware that if you are at the limit *controlling* the car with 2 hands you have no need to shift. If you feel the need to shift gears mid turn, you were in the wrong gear entering the turn Apply power on turnout, you can safely and easily shift a manual.

Shift controls on the wheel (and really automatic/manuals that shift faster then a human) are for scraping those few tenths off a hot lap time: no one is disputing that. Most paddle shifters are in a fixed position which also prevents shifting while turning the car at the limits.

Paddles serve zero purpose on the street in terms of making a car 'faster'.

As for texting, sort of a tangent but I don't think anyone that is of sound mind would argue that either: texting is more dangerous then a drunk who is at least looking forward and attempting to control the car.

Almost got hit the other day while jogging near my house by a house frau in an SUV.

You know because you see the phone and the top of their heads instead of their eyes and hands

Yah, I would NEVER shift while mid turn near the limits. Very dangerous. Better just bounce off the limiter.
