Rapidly decreasing value?

Got on Autotrader for the heck of it to see what 370's are going for and how many are for sale.

1. Was really surprised by how many are for sale on there that aren't posted up here by private sellers. Pricing seems to be all over the place too.

2. Really surprised how many 40th's are for sale, that they aren't posted here, and especially the asking prices for them. When I bought mine there were like 2 in the whole country. Seems that since I bought my 40th last year people have been dropping their 40th like flies and letting them go for much less than what I paid.

I understand that our cars have been passed up in many areas since 2009 and there is a small market for a 2 seater. One of my favorite features of the Z is the fact that it doesn't have all the bells and whisles that take the driver out of the equation. The rawness of this car is what make me love driving it so much. Your thoughts?

RobV 04-10-2016 09:23 AM

I got a nice discount on my new left over 2014 back in September. I don't plan on ever replacing it or selling it so resale doesn't really matter to me. Honestly 40th Anniv. doesn't really matter much either. Harley's actually do a lot of Anniv. editions that it's way over done. Really if it isn't a 25th or 50th or 100th it really doesn't matter.

mishuko 04-10-2016 09:48 AM

cars depreciate. if you want to sell it to keep value better put it in a storage box for about 15 more years

barncobob 04-10-2016 10:02 AM

ive had 3 corvettes, 1MBZ SL500, 3 porsches,2 Bmws, 2 older 65 Stangs and now the Z..
I have lost money on all of them except for the 67 427/390 corvette roadster,,wish I had it back, it is way out of my budget now.

if ure worried about depreciation, u should've sold the car before the 4th or 5th year.

Spooler 04-10-2016 10:53 AM

First you have to be careful buying used. IF the prices are real low it is for a reason. I am sure someone will buy my totaled Nismo and put it back on the road with a rebuilt title. Will it be fixed correctly. Most likely not. The frame acutally collapsed in on itself. I talked with the frame guy at the bodyshop and got the full scoop on what happened. It was nasty because I was hit hard. Insurance put the screws to me on the price because of crap like this on for sale 370z's.

AV8rZ 04-10-2016 11:04 AM

Not worried at all about the reality of a car losing value, I'm not stupid enough to believe it was an investment. I'm just a little surprised how many people are dumping the car. I don't plan on getting rid of mine for a long time, it's paid for, but just noticing a trend and wanted to see if it's just me or does anyone else feel differently, that's all.

AV8rZ 04-10-2016 11:08 AM

Was also surprised how many of these cars aren't posted here. I don't believe for a second that most of the cars aren't forum members. Probably figure we all have our car so why would we want another or they will get more money from non forum members.

kenchan 04-10-2016 11:29 AM

i wouldnt post here if i was going to sell my Z. why would i? itd be easier just selling it to carmax or trade her in. no strings attached.

exactly... most people that are 'selling' the car will just trade it in. eat a crap load from the dealer bite the bullet and buy the newer car.

It's true. Look at the number sold over the years and the number of forum members. Its even more true when you consider that many of the forum member user names are no longer active.

The ratio of Z owners here in Austin is probably 5:1 non-forum members to forum members.

I suspect that the vast majority of Z drivers have never even heard of this internet forum.

All these are great points! This is why I posted this up. I bought my car off of this site. It wasn't advertised anywhere else. I did pay a little more than I probably should have just because it was a 40th with 8000 miles on it. All I know is I love driving my Z and am thankful for this forum to go along with owning it. And unless something drastic happens where I need cash fast I plan on having mine for many years to come. Thanks for all your valuable input gents!

That may be an exaggeration. But the number of Z's I see on a weekly basis that I'm 90% sure are not on this forum has risen dramatically in the past year. At one time there was a black Nismo and a white sport model literally within 5 houses on either side of me and another one a few streets over. None of them are on the forum and none were even interested in it when I spoke with them.

That's too bad, I don't know what I'd do without this forum. I have learned so much and gotten so many ideas that there is no way I could've had without this forum.

Come on man, my 43rd edition Fatboy was the built to look like the 25th edition circa 4th quarter. Its classic!

The new camaro has turned many heads. They'll get dumped even faster when the Corvette GS gets into the mix.

Nixin 04-10-2016 04:23 PM

No one 'normal' person buys a Z, or any sports car for that matter, as an investment. Put it in gear, step on the gas and enjoy the drive and the view.

RonRizz 04-10-2016 04:44 PM

Personally, I could care less what they say my car is worth. I haven't traded a car in in so long........ I just buy the next one, and keep 'em till the wheels come off.

In my vast experience (hey, I'm 65!) the dealer won't give you crap for your trade-in. I always get the best price for it on Craiglist. That's how I sold my '94 Teggie LS 5-spd HB. The dealer wanted to give me squat for it on the Z. My email was on fire with all the requests to see it on CList. Got close to the price I wanted.

s2krazyyy 04-10-2016 09:31 PM

Z34s are pretty cheap right now. One of the reasons I went for a Z is cause I got a great deal on a 40th

AV8rZ 04-10-2016 09:41 PM

With all that is said on this topic, I just want to chime in and say that my Z is priceless, along with every other Z out there, and this car is iconic! I love my Z and have always loved every other Z out there. It is a poor mans Porsche and I wouldn't have it any other way. I'm frugal by nature and and am thankful the Z is the most underrated sports car out there.. For me, my 370Z is the icing on the cake! I am a loyal person in general, will always be loyal to the Z, and am loyal to this forum and its members. Semper Fi!!!

ayrton88 04-11-2016 09:25 AM

I plan on keeping mine for quite a few more years. What I am concerned about is that there will be even fewer people that will know how to drive a stick by then. I can just hear the dealer if I wanted to trade, "well we can't give you very much because nobody can drive a stick". I already had that happen when I was trading my BMW for the Z. That was in 2012. Maybe it will be different with a sports car. Most Bimmer drivers are kind of wussy and can't be bothered shifting for themselves.

Zoren 370 04-11-2016 09:49 AM

^ speaking of manual shifter is going to be obsolete.
Nissan had it again with its innovation...the prototype IDS coming out 2020 making driving skills a thing of the past.
Keep your Z for the next 30 years most people would not even know how to drive it.

OldGuyFla 04-11-2016 09:53 AM

Lots of Zs on the market means a buyers market which is good for all of us that want one. This will be the last car I will ever buy unless it is wrecked, then it's no good anymore.

Just for fun I went to Carmax and asked them what they'd give me for my 2009. It was approximately what I still owe on it. Never really planned to get rid of it anyway, so I'm not too concerned.

You should probably expect around $12K trade in value. Could be more or less depending on location, condition, and season :twocents:
